General MSU Billings Scholarships

All MSUB students who study abroad are still able to apply for general MSUB scholarships and have whatever scholarships are received be applied toward study abroad experiences as long as the program is offered through MSU Billings.
Foster Family Endowed Scholarship for International Education
Deadlines: March 1 (fall or year abroad); Dec. 1 (spring abroad); Dec. 1 (summer abroad)
Awards: Ranges from $250-$1,000
For full-time MSUB students pursuing a study abroad program during the upcoming academic year. Preference is given to: 1) students with demonstrated financial need and/or 2) students who plan to study abroad for at least one semester. Students must meet the following eligibility criteria: Study abroad in an MSUB or MUS program; Montana resident; Maintain a minimum 3.25 GPA; Be enrolled full time (12+ credits);
Competitive students should agree to assist the Office of International Studies in marketing efforts on campus prior to and after the completion of a study abroad; and create a study abroad video or presentation of your experience and be prepared to present upon returning to MSUB.
UISFL Language & Study Abroad Scholarship (Japan, China & South Korea)
Deadline: March 1 | Award: $2,350 +language courses prior to departure
Funding by the Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language (UISFL) program has been awarded to MSU Billings to develop new study abroad programs for Japan, South Korea, and China. All full-time undergraduate MSUB students are eligible for these programs. Students will begin language studies at MSUB before studying at one of our partner universities in China, Japan, or South Korea. Students are obligated to spend two consecutive semesters abroad.
The MSUB UISFL will offer the following scholarships to students:
• Support for Study Abroad 2021-2022: $1,200
• Student Stipends for language study prior to study abroad (course fees, materials): $1,000
• Study Abroad Application Fee Waiver (for successful applicants): $150
• Online or face-to-face language study prior to studying abroad: FREE
David L. Hood International Faculty/Student Scholar Exchange Endowed Scholarship
Deadline: February 1 | Award: One award of $625 is granted per academic year
For MSUB students studying abroad at an institute of higher education OR to international students attending MSUB. One award of $625 is granted per academic year. Eligible applicants must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and be enrolled in a minimum of nine credits while receiving the scholarship.
U.S. Government Sponsored Scholarships
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program offers grants to U.S. undergraduates with limited financial means, in order to diversify the population of students going abroad. To be eligible for the Gilman Program, applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship. Preference is given to first-generation, low-income students. Preferred subject areas include critical language acquisition.

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and named after the late senator John S. McCain from Arizona. The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. The scholarship is open to eligible students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid.

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) invests in promising students with financial need who wish to study abroad. Potential applicants who meet the eligibility requirements may participate on any international education program that meets their academic objectives.

The annual scholarships of the National Security Education Program provides funding to undergraduate students from the U.S. to study less popularly studied, minority world languages. Promoting linguistic and cultural immersion, this award program aims to support students focusing on language studies that are critical to U.S. national security. Boren Scholars can choose to study abroad in their country of choice, excluding nations within Western Europe as well as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In exchange for funding, scholars must commit to working in the federal government for at least a year after graduation.

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs provides American students with the opportunity to enjoy fully-funded overseas summer language and cultural immersion programs through the awarding of Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) each year. Applicants are selected based on their commitment to studying non-traditional languages abroad, including Arabic, Japanese, Swahili, and Russian. The Critical Language Scholarship is only open to American undergraduate and graduate students.
Fulbright U.S. Student Program

The Fullbright U.S.Student Program provides grants to selected individuals to work, live, and learn for one academic year in a foreign country. There are two types of grants provided by the Fullbright U.S. Student Program: Study/Research and English Teaching Assistant. This Fullbright grant is open to graduate students, recent graduates, and young professionals in the United States. The total number of grants distributed each year depends on the availability of federal appropriated funds.

Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation Scholarship

The Foundation supports undergraduate college/university Silver or Gold Award Girl Scouts who plan to study abroad, irrespective of major/minor. It is not necessary to be a Scholarship to Study a Foreign Language recipient to apply for this one time Scholarship to Study Abroad, nor are Scholarship to Study a Foreign Language recipients excluded from applying. The Scholarship to Study Abroad provides $1,000 directly to the awardee upon verification that they have begun their study abroad experience. The Scholarship to Study Abroad IS NOT renewable. Application may be submitted for studying abroad during first semester, second semester, summer, or the full academic year.

The Diverse International Women Of Color (DIWC) Study Abroad Scholarship is intended to assist women of color who are exceptional in their studies and in need of financial assistance to study abroad. DIWC will award $500 scholarships to women of color who have been accepted to an In-Person Study Abroad Program.

The Voyager Scholarship helps students pursuing careers in public service by providing access to travel and education. The Voyager Scholarship is administered by the Obama Foundation. Airbnb will provide accommodations and other support to participants. Application and scholarship disbursement is administered by Scholarship America. The program is funded by a $100 million personal contribution from Brian Chesky, Airbnb Co-Founder and CEO.The Voyager Scholarship Program is a two-year, leadership development and scholarship program.
The program identifies students in their third year of undergraduate studies who have a passion for public service. Over the course of two years, programming will facilitate opportunities for students to refine their values-based leadership approach, build bridges across communities, and nurture their sense of curiosity as they deepen their commitment to pursuing public service careers.
Tortuga Backpacks Study Abroad Scholarship

Tortuga Backpacks provides study abroad funding to students with a desire to take amazing extracurricular trips while studying abroad. This scholarship is awarded biannually to qualified American undergraduate students, as well as students who have a U.S. visa, who are interested in exploring more of the world during their international program.
Ashley Soulé Conroy Study Abroad Scholarship

Degree Level: at least 30 hours of completed undergraduate credit by the time of the study abroad term’s start date.
The Ashley Soulé Conroy Foundation (Ashley’s Foundation) first began in 2006, as a way of honoring the life of Ashley Soulé Conroy and as a way for Ashley’s family and friends to heal in the wake of her passing. With a love of travel being one of Ashley’s core traits, they envisioned a small foundation, something that could perhaps someday offer scholarships in Ashley’s name to a few deserving university students planning to study abroad. They envisioned a way of helping these students realize their dream of studying in the far flung corners of the globe that Ashley so dreamed of visiting herself someday.

The Golden Key Scholarship is an education-based scholarship awarded to qualified individuals (members) with outstanding academic, leadership, and service achievements. Each year, the Golden Key International Honor Society offers scholarship awards to both undergraduate and graduate students. The objective of this scholarship is to give students the opportunity to develop their professional skills in an international environment.
Allianz Global Assistance Scholarship

With a belief that international travel can help students grow and expand their horizons, Allianz Global Assistance has been dedicated to giving students the opportunity to travel the world for over a decade. American students enrolled in accredited high schools, colleges, or universities can submit a 60 to 90 second video OR a 500-word essay answering the question “How can international travel impact my life?”, to apply for Allianz Global’s ScholarTrip funding opportunity.
Owner Direct Vacation Rentals Study Away Scholarship

Owner Direct values the benefits of education and travel as a way to learn first-hand about the world we live in. To encourage this, we are offering one student a $500 scholarship to put towards studying away from home. From plane tickets and tuition costs to outings and excursions, this scholarship money can be used to cover any expenses associated with studying away from home
Any US or Canadian full-time student over the age of 18 enrolled at an accredited university or college worldwide can apply. Eligible students should submit an original 600-800 word essay in PDF format to marketing@ownerdirect.com describing why travel is important. Essays will be judged based on the following: content, creativity, inspiration and style. One essay per entrant only.
Good Colleges Study Abroad Award

The Study Abroad Award essay competition is open to current and future college students who are interested in studying abroad. To enter, write a 150-250 word essay on this round's theme. Good Colleges scholarships are designed to be easy to apply for and to promote positive study attitudes.

German Regional Scholarship (Baden-Württemberg Scholarship)

With the Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM for University Students, the BWS enables some 1,200 students a year from all over the world to study in a foreign country for a period of three to eleven months. The objective of the Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM for University Students is to promote the international exchange of highly qualified German and foreign students. The scholarships are divided equally between applicants from Baden-Württemberg and from abroad.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarship

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers a wide range of scholarships for Canadian or American students who want to pursue study or research in Germany. Scholarships are competitive and range from support for short-term programs to monthly financial support for the duration of a German degree program.
Finlandia Foundation National Scholarship
Deadline: Feb. 1 annually | Award: $1,000-$3,000 | Degree Levels: Bachelor, Masters
Applicants must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in a college or university in the U.S. or Finland and must plan research on Finnish culture in the U.S. They must be studying at the sophomore level or higher and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Financial need, course of study and citizenship are considered in evaluating applications. Students may not receive funds for two consecutive years.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. A Freeman-ASIA award provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books, etc. Applicants must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents studying at the undergraduate level at a two-year or four-year college or university who demonstrate financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

In order to increase ties and relationships throughout the world, the National Institute for International Education of South Korea offers foreign university students from countries with bilateral cultural agreements with South Korea the opportunity to study abroad in Korea. The Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) aims to support future global leaders by promoting real international education.
Japan Study Abroad: The Bridging Foundation Scholarship

The United States-Japan Bridging Foundation, through collaboration with the Bridging Project Clearinghouse at the American Association of Teachers of Japan, awards scholarships to U.S. undergraduate students who want to study in Japan for a semester or a full academic year. Approximately 100 scholarships are awarded annually to applicants demonstrating a strong interest in a higher education in Japan and a demand for financial assistance annually.
Toshizo Watanbe Study Abroad Scholarship Program

The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to undergraduates/graduate students for a semester or year-long study abroad program in either the United States or Japan. A generous endowment gift of $10 million from Mr. Toshizo (Tom) Watanabe to the U.S.-Japan Council makes it possible to award scholarships to students for whom study abroad would not be possible without financial support.
The scholarship will support up to the full cost of attendance to the study abroad program of the applicant’s choice. The scholarship program grants awards to recipients in amounts determined by financial need and other qualifications. 2020 marks the third year to support American students studying abroad in Japan, and the fifth year for Japanese students studying abroad in the United States.

Study in Holland promotes international education programs to Dutch students while providing resources and guidance for incoming international students. The Holland Scholarship is provided by Study in Holland and financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science as well as multiple research universities based in the Netherlands. The Holland Scholarship offers funding for non-European Economic Area (EEA) students that wish to study in Holland. Applicants should be in their first year of undergraduate or graduate studies.

Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), the Chevening Scholarship provides recipients worldwide with the unique opportunity to develop their potential, both academically and professionally, at any UK university.
