Artist Statement

Both books are in "Woven and Interlocking Book Structures" that I  co-published with Claire van Vliet from the Janus, Steiner and Gefn presses.

The design of the book and the structure are usually in response to the text and are often prompted by a call for entries for an exhibition. I enjoy the challenge of designing a new structure that is non-adhesive.

About the Artist

Steiner attended Canterbury University School of Art, then trained in Occupational therapy. She practiced Occupational Therapy in New Zealand and the United Kingdom prior to tutoring at the New Zealand Occupational Therapy School. Then she returned to Painting and Printmaking followed by Papermaking using plant materials. Steiner attended the First New Zealand Book Symposium in 1993 where Claire van Vliet and Bonnie Thompson-Norman conducted the workshop. There she discovered a medium that combined a number of various skills she had gathered over the years. Since then she has attended workshops given by Keith Smith, Scott McCarney, Hedi Kyle and Marta Gomez, plus other teachers as well as giving workshops in New Zealand and Australia.

In 2002, Steiner published "Woven and Interlocking Book Structures" with Claire van Vliet and continues to design new non-adhesive binding structures. Her books are usually produced in editions of up to 30.
