Louis Habeck unveils exhibit in Northcutt Steele Gallery

MSU BILLINGS NEWS — The Northcutt Steele Gallery at Montana State University Billings now features “A Subboreal Studios Mysterious Museum Installation,” an exhibition of mixed-media works created by Louis Habeck in collaboration with high school students from across the state participating in the Montana Art Interscholastics (MAI).
A public reception will be held at the Northcutt Steele Gallery on Friday, June 7
from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This catered reception is free and open to the public.
MAI was held on the MSU Billings campus May 9-10 and was coordinated by MSUB ceramics art faculty member Randi O’Brien. MAI offers high school students from across the state the opportunity to explore their creativity under the guidance of professional artists. This yearly event features a variety of workshops in which students engage in hands-on learning in the artistic process.
Habeck offered a class for students participating in MAI that focused on exploring the art of display. Students assisted in creating a gallery experience inspired by actual behind-the-scenes natural history museum workshops circa early 20th Century. The resulting groups of objects create a mysterious setting that allows the viewer to imagine stepping into another place and time.
In the guise of old-fashioned creature taxidermy, the students were engaged in the creation of a life-sized Triceratops and horse sculpture; as well as assisting to install and arrange museum displays occupied by fantastic creatures.
“A Subboreal Studios Mysterious Museum Installation,” is on display through June 20. The Northcutt Steele Gallery is located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts building on the Montana State University Billings campus. The gallery, which is supported in part by funds from ASMSUB (Associated Students of MSUB) and the MSUB Foundation, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information visit www.msubillings.edu/gallery or www.facebook.com/northcuttsteelegallery.
