MSU BILLINGS NEWS—The Elk River Writing Project at Montana State University Billings recently hosted a graduate course on best literacy practices with an emphasis on Indian Education for All.

Novice and experienced teachers in a variety of disciplines have been developing strategies to cultivate the best literacy practices within a multicultural and place-based writing pedagogy during the Invitation Leadership Institute on the MSU Billings campus. In their exploration of literacy, participants have spent significant time developing their own writing, reading, and learning effective ways to incorporate writing into their classrooms.

The course follows a hybrid instructional model.  Following the final June face-to-face class, educators enrolled in the course will continue their coursework focusing on their own questions or tensions about teaching writing, which may include addressing Indian Education for all in their classrooms. On Aug. 8, participants will present their final teacher inquiry projects. The educators will also create a lesson centered in their inquiry which they can use in their own classroom.

The leadership team for the course includes Bridgett Paddock, Donna Miller, Ph.D., Lisa Borgstrom, Cheyenne Aldrich and Marcia Beaumont.

Participants will earn seven graduate credits for their participation.
