MSUB offers a free workshop on astrophotography

MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Montana State University Billings will be presenting a free two-day introduction to astrophotography workshop with Phil Hosey on the nights of June 8and 9.

Hosey will share his expertise in photographing the starry night with workshop participants. He first became interested in astronomy as a child after a school field trip to a planetarium and has always been fascinated by the beauty and mystery of the night sky. For the past ten years Phil has been involved in astrophotography as a hobby and enjoys sharing his experiences, expertise and love of the night sky with others.

This will be a two-day introduction with participants meeting both on and off campus. On June 8, participants will be in the MSUB Science Auditorium and will have components consisting of introductions to deep sky objects, an introduction to astrophotography, challenges and problems of astrophotography, and using a DLSR camera and tripod to capture photos. The second day, June 9, participants will once again meet on the MSUB campus before proceeding to the BLM Recreation Area. This session will involve a discussion of astrophotography with telescopes, an introduction to post-processing images and photographing at the BLM Recreation Area.

The workshop will begin at 7:00 pm both days. The total length of the workshop will vary based on how long participants stay to take pictures.

Participants will need to bring their own DSLR camera, a tripod, and a shutter release cable. It is also highly recommended that participants bring an intervalometer specific to their camera model to control exposure time of the images.

This will be a free presentation. Only twenty people can participate in the workshop, and those interested will need to register here.

Educators who participate in the workshop can earn four OPI renewal credits.
