MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Frank Warren, creator of PostSecret, will present on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. in Petro Theater at MSU Billings. PostSecret is an ongoing community art project started in 2005 where people from around the world mail their secrets anonymously on the side of a postcard.
The event is open to MSUB students, faculty and staff, as well as the public.
Warren brings PostSecret to colleges and universities in a live show, which addresses secrets in today’s society, and reveals the inspiration and grit people gain from sharing their stories to PostSecret. MSUB Student Activities Board members saw Warren’s performance live at the National Association of Campus Activities conference and selected him to be the keynote speaker for their annual Power of One week.
“Our students are extremely excited for PostSecret and Frank to come to campus,” commented Kristin Peterman, associate director of student life and university events. The theme of this year’s Power of One Week is “Reaching Resilience.” In addition to the keynote, MSUB will have a series of weeklong events centered on mental health and resilience.
PostSecret allows people to share a completely true secret that has never been revealed through the veil of anonymity. At times hilarious and heartbreaking, the secrets reflect complex issues of intimacy, stigma, meaning, humor, and desire. The sharing of secrets is designed to empower, inspire, heal, and instill a sense of hope in those who participate in PostSecret.
To date, they have received over 1 million postcards. In 2017, the National Postal Museum featured more than 500 postcards submitted to PostSecret.
A book signing will follow Warren’s presentation. Warren is the author of six books that are compilations of secrets shared to the PostSecret website with some secrets that had not been revealed until they were featured in the book.
PostSecretU will also be held in conjunction with PostSecret Live. During PostSecretU, MSUB students will have the opportunity to write and share their own secrets, which will be displayed on campus as part of the collaborative, community art project for Power of One Week.
The week also features stress relief crafts, suicide prevention training for MSUB students, faculty, and staff, and a workshop led by Karen Grosz for reaching resilience and setting goals.
