Final Service Saturday planned for March 18

MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — This year, the Office for Community Involvement made a goal for Montana State University Billings to rack up 10,000 service hours.

 

We are nearly half way there, which is why the OCI is encouraging students, faculty and staff to participate in Service Saturday, taking place March 18.

 

This is the final Service Saturday for the academic year, so it is important to get as large a turnout as possible said Volunteer Engagement Coordinator Shayla Fox.

 

“Everyone is welcome,” Fox said. “We hope to get a big push in our service hours.”

 

Anne Cole, a reading instructor at City College, is getting her students involved in the day.

 

“I am excited to involve my City College students in Service Saturday. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to meaningfully connect with each other, with the larger university, and with the community while helping others. Given that many of my students have families of their own, they can bring their kids which will be fun too,” Cole said.

 

Projects lined out for the day, which begins at 9:30 a.m., in the Student Union Building atrium, include working at the Friendship House, Audubon Educational Center, Billings Park and Recreation, Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter and assisting with the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Billings.

 

There will also be indoor service options, to accommodate for weather, Fox said.

 

Sponsors for this Service Saturday include the Honors Program and Associated Students of MSUB.

 

Fox also stressed that anyone can log their Service Sting hours for the year at msubillings.edu/community.

 

 

“If you’ve completed volunteer projects sponsored by MSUB, service learning in the classroom or even volunteered outside of your time, like giving blood, all of those hours count,” she said.
