MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Where can you go to sample popular foods from a dozen countries- representing the cultures of international Montana State University Billings students?
The 14th Annual International Food Fair, hosted by MSU Billings Office of International Studies (OIS). The popular event will be held from 4 p.m., to 7 p.m., March 16 at Rimrock Café on the University campus.
The food fair is a fundraiser for the International Club, and proceeds will help pay for upcoming events.
Menu items include cuisine from Bulgaria, China, France, Germany, Honduras, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, and South Korea.
With so many tempting culinary creations to be on display, like miso soup from Japan, Sambousa, a ground lamb filled filo dough served with hummus and tabbouleh from Saudi Arabia and the Honduran favorite of chocolate covered frozen bananas with peanuts and sprinkles there is sure to be something to thrill every palate.
International Club Member Rena Fowler said she joined the student organization in part because of her family’s involvement in supporting international students.
As a child, the International Food Fair was a favorite function for her family to attend.
“I remember the food was really good and it was always fun to see students’ traditional clothing,” Fowler said. “We’re trying to bring some of those elements back to this event, as it’s a wonderful way to share and experience many cultures.”
International Club members are taking an integral role with the food fair and will be meeting with MSUB chefs on March 16 to learn how to create their specific menu items.
Members will be in the kitchen and serving their culinary creations the day of the fair.
Neil Beyer, OIS international marketing and outreach specialist, said food served this year will be, “more street food in style.”
“We want the theme carried throughout the fair of street foods you would find commonplace, a lot of what the locals eat,” Beyer said.
Additionally, students will also share more of their respective cultures through language, writing, fashion and music.
“The great thing about this event is that the local community gets exposed to our varied student groups,” Beyer said. “I think, especially in this particular time it’s important to meet face to face with diverse numbers of people.”
OIS Director Dr. Paul Foster added, “You don’t need to know the language or have studied culture to enjoy and appreciate food or music.”
The public is invited to the food fair, which costs $12 per person. Tickets are available at the OIS Office, at 1500 University Dr., McDonald Hall Room 150 or at the door.
