MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — 

Advising and Career Services at MSU Billings recognized student interns and student employees Tuesday afternoon at its annual awards luncheon.

 

Four MSUB students who took part in cooperative education internship programs in the 2015-16 academic year were awarded for their outstanding contributions, achievements and professionalism by the faculty and agency supervisors.

 

One student, Cody Dayley, was awarded with the Student Employee of the Year award and is a candidate for the statewide award for his service as City College’s process plant laboratory technician, a position he has held since fall 2015 under the Federal Work Study program. The honor recognizes accomplishments in which the demonstrate reliability, initiative, quality of work, professionalism and community and campus services.

 

Dayley’s nominator, Andrew Sullivan, process plant technology instructor, said Dayley’s performance “is among the highest I have witnessed in my experiences that include hosting five Work Study students, supervising chemical engineers and being responsible for the shift organization at a local refinery representing 124 employees.”

 

New to this year, an award for Faculty Internship Supervisor of the Year went to Mr. Wayne Dagel in the Rehabilitation and Human Services department in the College of Allied Health Professions. Dagel was nominated by student Jadie Schatz, whose internship he supervised in 2015.

 

“Wayne always gave us valuable and real-life information in his seminar discussions,” Schatz said. “He taught us it is okay to make mistakes, and that the real world is messy and that working in the human service field is a tough career…but it can also be fun. Wayne did everything he could to prepare his students for a real world career.”


The MSU Billings Cooperative Education program provides students with “real world” experiences by placing them in internships throughout the community where they develop their job skills while earning credit to enhance their education.

 

In 2015, 223 student internships were completed and of those, 80 positions were paid an average hourly rate of $13.39.

 

Those honored for their work this year were:

College of Allied Health Professions
Rachael Candelaria, a Human Services intern, was nominated by Ms. Mandie Clark of Billings Public Schools Early Childhood Intervention. Clark commented, “Rachael conducted assessments and home visits with the professionalism and compassion of a seasoned Family Support Specialist. Her ability to walk into a home, unprepared for what she would find and maintain a calm, friendly demeanor that put families at ease was impressive.” Ms. Candelaria will graduate in May with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services.

College of Arts and Sciences
Holly Grob, an Art intern, was nominated by Ms. Tracy Linder of Tracy Linder Art and Mr. Mark Earnhart, assistant professor of Art at MSU Billings. Linder commented, “Holly Grob is an incredible individual, I am exceptionally pleased with having her assistance in my studio. This has been an opportunity for both of us. MSUB can be proud to have students such as Holly, I really can't say enough positives about this experience.” Ms. Grob graduated in August 2015 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

College of Business
David Lucia, a Business Administration intern, was nominated by Mr. Mike Craighill of Soup and Such. Craighill commented, “David was an outstanding intern. He immediately took ownership and even ran the company on two separate occasions while I was away. David was professional with our team, who quickly came to see him as a leader/manager in the company. His leadership on the Catering Menu project is going to lead to a menu that has the potential of increasing our business by 15-20%. His work on this project has been tireless and exemplary.” Mr. Lucia graduated from City College with an Associate of Science degree in Fire Science in December 2015 and is now earning his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

City College
Cash Doornek, a Process Plant Technology intern, was nominated by Mr. Bill Solberg of CHS Refinery. Solberg commented, “Cash is very good at leading by example, showing others instead of telling. He is consistently lining up tasks, so when he is finished with one job, he has another to jump to. Cash is very well organized. This student exhibited outstanding leadership qualities as well as an understanding of what we do here at CHS. It is quite refreshing to see that kind of ambition along with such an upbeat approach his work.” Mr. Doornek graduated with his Associate of Applied Science degree in Process Plant Technology in December 2015.

Faculty Internship Supervisor of the Year
A new award this year, the Faculty Internship Supervisor of the Year Award is given to Mr. Wayne Dagel in the Rehabilitation and Human Services department in the College of Allied Health Professions.
