MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — The Montana State University Billings Music Department has several performances on tap for next week, featuring the Symphonic Band, the Percussion Ensemble, the MSUB large and small Jazz Ensembles and a junior and senior recital.

Junior and senior recitals are free and open to the public. Concert tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors and free for students and staff with a valid ID. Concerts will be held in the Cisel Recital Hall on the university campus, 1500 University Drive. 

On Saturday, April 16, music performance major Mady Johnson will perform her junior clarinet recital beginning at 3 p.m. A student of Gary Behm, she will be accompanied by Tim Schoessler on the piano and will perform works by Paul Hindemith, George Gershwin and Johannes Brahms.

Johnson graduated in 2013 from Shepherd High School in Shepherd, Mont. She can be heard regularly around Billings playing in multiple university ensembles including the Symphonic Band, Pep Band and Jazz Ensemble, as well as various local bands and musicals in the city. In early February, Johnson had the opportunity to perform with Wayne Bergeron at the 2016 MSUB Jazz Festival.

Also on April 16, vocal performance major Kelly Marie Deiling, soprano, will present her senior recital at 7:30 p.m. She will be accompanied by Tim Schoessler on piano. Her program will consist of works by Strauss, Handel, Mozart, Dvořák, and Verdi.

The daughter of Thomas and Jeanine Deiling, Deiling graduated from Skyview High School and has been studying voice with Professor Douglas Nagel since 2011. She has been an active participant in school choirs since she was in middle school, and has also participated in numerous productions with the Rimrock Opera Company since 2005; she will sing a Spirit in NOVA’s “Die Zauberflöte” in 2017. 

On Monday, April 18, the MSUB Symphonic Band will perform its Spring Concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. The performance will be a celebration of the wonderful diversity of music available to the modern wind band. The program will include transcriptions of works by C.P.E. Bach and Sigmund Romberg, as well as original works for band by Jared Spears, William Walton and Eric Osterling. Also included in the program is music from Richard Roger’s The King and I and a medley of Walt Disney favorites. The band is under the direction of Dr. Mark Fenderson.

On Tuesday, April 19, the MSUB Percussion Ensemble will present its Spring Concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. The ensemble, under the direction of Luke Kestner, will perform pieces by Chick Corea, Mitchell Peters and Arvo Part.

On Wednesday, April 20, music performance major Tyler Briceno will perform his senior percussion recital. He is a student of Luke Kestner and Matt Devitt. This recital is free and open to the public. The program will include pieces by Casey Canglosi, Ivan Trevino, Keiko Abe and others, and will employ a wide variety of percussion instruments.

In addition to pursing his degree at MSUB, Briceno is an active member of the Billings music community, performing with many area groups including the Billings Symphony. After completing his bachelor’s degree Tyler plans to pursue a master’s degree and become a professional performer and educator. 

On Thursday, April 21, the MSUB large and small Jazz Ensembles will present a Spring Concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. The program will feature music by Tadd Dameron, Jeff Jarvis, Buddy Rich, Bill Holman, Frank Foster, Count Basie and others. Mark Fenderson will be featured as a guest trumpeter with the ensemble.
