Montana State University’s Student Gallery Presents 4AM by Jamie LaRie Winter, March 15 – March 27, closing reception on March 27 from 5-7 p.m.
MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — English and art major Jamie LaRie Winter explores narrative paintings in her senior exhibition that will be on display March 15-27 in Montana State University Billings' Student Gallery.
There will be a closing reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on March 27 in the Student Gallery located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts Building. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
The exhibit titled “4AM” explores the thoughts behind the anonymous quote,"And if you are awake at 4AM, you are either in love or lonely, and I don’t know which one is worse." This series of narrative paintings follows the progression of being both in love and lonely and the honesty that arises from late nights—a slow and deliberate intoxication, Winter said.
Using wine and coffee, Winter paints expressive portraits intermixed with the thought process that accompanies being lonely and in love at 4AM and the coping mechanisms that follow. She believes that by combining her art and writing she is able to present a sincere form of communication that creates a textual aesthetic.
Winter will graduate in May with a B.A. in English and art. Coming from a relatively isolated state, she hopes to move to the West coast after graduation to a more urban location to further her exploration of art with diversified surroundings.
Winter's writing explores her own internal monologue as well the hidden aspects of those surrounding her, which then influences her portrait centered art practice. She finds inspiration in literature and poetry, indie films, travel and people watching.
She has shown in small group and juried shows such as the 4x4 Show in Powell, Wyo., the Art Students League’s Annual Art Auction and the Northcutt Steele Gallery’s Juried Student Show at MSUB.
