Meeting is set for Wednesday at downtown campus

MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — The Urban Institute at Montana State University Billings will be hosting a community listening session on the effects of Tax Increment Finance Districts (TIFDs) in the Billings community.

The session — free and open to the public — will be Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. at the MSU Billings Downtown campus’ Broadway IIIA meeting room, 2804 3rd Ave. N.

The goal of the project is to answer two questions: 1) How much of a difference has TIFD funding made in the economic activity occurring within a TIF district? and 2) Did the operation of these TIF districts result in taxpayers outside these districts paying a larger share of the city or county tax burdens?

The session will include a brief description of Montana Tax Increment Finance Districts, an outline of the pending analysis, and a listening session for stakeholders to share their own experiences with TIFDs. The session will include a presentation on TIFD analysis being prepared by the MSU Billings Center for Applied Economic Research.
