Mary Alice Spencer
Biography
Mary Alice Spencer is a retired geologist with a background in teaching. She began studying the book arts in 1983 with classes in calligraphy. That interest expanded to learning about handmade books which could be a platform for calligraphy. When she retired in 1995, she began taking art classes at Montana State University Billings to expand her knowledge of media which could be combined with calligraphy and books to make other artwork. To do that, she has studied several semesters of drawing, watercolor painting and printmaking.
She has experimented on her own with simple printmaking techniques that use non-toxic materials done inexpensively with simple tools. Mary Alice occasionally teaches classes for adults and children. She is active in both the local and Montana calligraphy guilds.
