Make an Appointment to Explore Careers

I have no idea which careers or majors I should consider.

  1. Choosing Careers & Majors Start the career exploration process by watching a video on the process of exploring skills, interests, and values then providing resources on where to access career information and job outlook data
  2. Take an interest assessment through the Montana Career Information System web page.
  3. Explore our Major & Career Information Sheets to see where graduates have gone, projected salary, sample jobs that you can get with degrees from MSUB and City College.
  4. Email us to make an appointment to explore choices with Career Specialists here in our office.

I'm interested in 1-3 broad career fields but I don't know what kinds of jobs I can get.

  1. Take an interest assessment through the Montana Career Information System web page.
  2. Watch videos to learn about the work people do in nearly 550 careers, organized in the 16 career clusters recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  3.  Explore our Major & Career Information Sheets to see where graduates have gone, projected salary, sample jobs that you can get with degrees from MSUB and City College.

I've got about 4-6 specific occupations I'm considering but I need some focus.

  1. Interview a professional.  Who do you know that currently works in the fields you are considering?  Invite them out to coffee and ask them what it’s like to have their job!  Contact us if you need help getting connected to local professionals.
  2. Attend any of our upcoming On-Campus Career Events to network with local employers.
  3. Email us to make an appointment with a Career Specialist.

I can't decide between two or three occupations.

  1. Search real job descriptions of jobs in your field to see what is entailed in the position.  Log into the MSUB CareerLink database and search your field for these positions.
  2. Interview a professional.  Who do you know that currently works in the fields you are considering?  Invite them out to coffee and ask them what it’s like to have their job!  Contact us if you need help getting connected to local professionals.
  3. Attend any of our upcoming On-Campus Career Events to network with local employers.

I'd like to "try out" an occupation before I make a big commitment.

    1. Try a job shadow experience.  When you job shadow you actually go to work with that person for a day or two in order to see what the job is really like. Contact us if you need help getting connected to local professionals for a job shadow experience.
    2. Get an internship.  Our career specialists can help you gain valuable work experience in your field while earning college credit!
    3. Get a part-time job that is similar to the occupation you are investigating.  Many times just trying out a similar job can help you decide if you’re really wanting a career in that area.  Log into the MSUB CareerLink database and search your field for currently open job positions.

Before you apply for any job or internship get help with writing a résumé and cover letter by emailing your documents to Career Services Staff for edits.
