City College at MSUB to host Tribal Language Symposium

MSU BILLINGS NEWS —On Sept. 21, City College at MSU Billings will host the Partnerships in Career Technical Education and Tribal Language Symposium beginning at 11 a.m. in the Great Room of the Health Sciences Building.

Presidents from Little Big Horn College, Chief Dull Knife College, Fort Peck Community College, and Aaniiih Nakoda College will serve on a cultural panel to present information about Native Language Preservation in their respective communities. They will also speak about partnerships between the Tribal Community Colleges and City College at MSU Billings.

In the past, collaboration has included visits from faculty and administration to tribal colleges, as well as cooperation on the Rev Up Grant and Indian Professional Development Grant.

Future partnerships will make transfer and graduation seamless and promote career and technical education, particularly Perkins Grant initiatives.

Following the symposium, visitors will be given a tour of the new Native American Student Success Center located in the Tech Building, room B008.

Interim Dean and Coordinator of Native American Student Success Services Florence Garcia, Ph.D., sees this event as the beginning of stronger relationships with tribal communities and a way to increase recruitment and retention.

Chancellor Dan Edelman is committed to serving students holistically. “Students are at the heart of everything we do,” says Edelman. “This symposium will strengthen our relationships with Native Americans statewide and make access to City College and MSU Billings more attainable for students.”
