MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — The MSUB Women’s and Gender Studies Center and Global Village (a nonprofit Fair Trade organization) are embarking on a three-part series focusing on human trafficking on the national and local level. The organizers are particularly interested in creating “action items” that local citizens can do to prevent, recognize and prevent human trafficking.
On Monday, October 16, they will host a film viewing of A Path Appears: Sex Trafficking in the USA at the Art House Cinema & Pub (109 North 30th Street). Doors open at 6 PM and the film will begin at 6:30 PM. There is no cost for this event.
The Department of Justice estimates that there are 300,000 children at risk of being trafficked into sexual slavery in the U.S. In the first episode of A Path Appears, we meet the survivors behind these shocking numbers, and illuminate the widespread existence of this violent crime taking place across America. A short discussion will follow the film screening and provide background to understand the problem of sex trafficking at the local level.
The second part of the series will take place on Monday, October 23 at the Women’s and Gender Studies Center at MSUB (Liberal Arts Building, Room 201) at 6 PM. This event will focus on the problem of sex trafficking in our region and opportunities for activism in Billings and the region. Penny Ronning, co-founder of the Yellowstone County Area Human Trafficking Task Force will lend her expertise.
The events are free and open to the public. For more information please contact the MSUB Women’s and Gender Studies Center, Dr. Jennifer Lynn at jennifer.lynn1@msubillings.edu or (406) 657-2922 or Global Village, Candace or Ruhiyyih at globalvillagenews@gmail.com or (406) 259-3024.
