MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Advising and Career Services at Montana State University Billings recognized student interns and student employees Tuesday afternoon at its annual awards luncheon.
Four MSUB students who took part in cooperative education internship programs in the 2016-17 academic year were awarded for their outstanding contributions, achievements and professionalism by the faculty and agency supervisors.
Additionally, awards for Student Worker of the Year and Faculty Internship Supervisor of the Year were given.
The MSU Billings Cooperative Education program provides students with “real world” experiences by placing them in internships throughout the community where they develop their job skills while earning credit to enhance their education.
In 2016, 245 student internships were completed and of those, 101 positions that paid an average hourly rate of $13.80.
Those honored for their work this year were:
College of Allied Health Professions
Logan Pederson completed her internship with the Montana Department of Health and Human Services. Her supervisor Lureta Nielsen nominated her.
Nielson commented that, “Logan has been very appropriate and professional in her interactions with me and other staff and clients.
There have been some hairy moments while working with families. She is able to maintain her composure and to think quickly on her feet.”
College of Arts and Sciences
Amelia Marquez was nominated by Dr. William Mouat for her service with Alberta Bair Theater for the Performing Arts.
Mouat said, “Amelia exceeded expectations in every category imaginable; these are superb work ethic, organizational skills, creativity, adaptability within constructs of lesson planning, communication with faculty and administrative personnel, cooperation, diplomacy with colleagues and students, and a completely professional demeanor. I could not ask for a better intern.”
College of Business
Kyle Heyneman was nominated for his work in information technology with First Interstate Bank by Mark Kastner.
“Kyle’s initiative was unbounded, he was like a sponge trying to soak up all the knowledge he possibly could and we provided the opportunity for him to do just that,” Kastner said. “On the other side though, he was able to take this new found knowledge and start to apply it very quickly.”
City College
Sam Rubin was recognized by Russ Palmer at Rimrock Subaru/Kia.
“Sam is an exceptional young man and is a pleasure to work with. He grasps and applies concepts and processes quickly and easily, knows when to ask questions, worked consistently to understand not only the systematic aspects of our shop, but the ebb and flow of work flow and customer prioritization. He will have a position in our employment for as long as he likes,” Palmer said.
Student Employee of the Year
Mariah Cattaneo was nominated by MSUB’s Technical and Access Services Librarian Darlene Hert.
“Mariah goes above and beyond in that she is a role model for her fellow employees and she takes the time to mentor them. Since she has been around an academic environment for the last four years, she is a good resource if new students have question about navigating the system and she offers sound advice about resources available on campus,” Hert said.
Faculty Internship Supervisor of the Year
Brenda Dockery, adjunct instructor with College of Business was nominated by marketing major Nicole Storud.
“Brenda went above and beyond to help me by always being available. I know she is a very busy professor and advisor and there was never a time that she turned me away. I would literally stop her in the hallway when it was clear she had something to do and she would still make time for me,” Storud said.
