MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — “Spectrum” can be defined as a broad range of related qualities, ideas or activities. The goal of the four-day Summer Institute at Montana State University Billings is to expose participants to the full range of education in the early 21st century.
The MSU Billings Summer Institute 2012 is set for June 5-8. The theme is “Full Spectrum: Impacting Education of the 21st Century.” Organizers say the conference is a perfect way for educators, social workers, parents, university students and anyone concerned about education to see beyond the arc that represents their current view of education.
Speakers with international reputations will give presentations on topics ranging from early literacy, inquiry-based instruction, addressing needs for gifted and talented students, teaching methods for the millennial student and implementation models for Indian Education for All.
Keynotes for the conference are:
Tuesday, June 5, 8:15 - 9:50 a.m.: Kevin Honeycutt returns to the Summer Institute to take a fun look at the exciting things that happen when educators step outside their boxes and use new tools. He reinforces the importance of relationships while encouraging teachers to become learners again through positive examples of student success. The presentation will be in Library 152 on the MSU Billings four-year campus.
Wednesday, June 6, 8:15 - 9:50 a.m.: Julie Cajune, Executive Director of the Center for American Indian Policy and Applied Research Center at Salish Kootenai College, recently completed a three-year project developing tribal history materials funded by the Montana State Legislature. Julie will share her findings in her keynote presentation. The presentation will be in Library 152 on the MSU Billings four-year campus.
The conference is sponsored by the Montana Center for Inclusive Education at MSU Billings (formerly the Montana Center for Disabilities) and includes funding from the Montana Regional Education Service Area III and the Region III Comprehensive System of Personnel Development, projects funded through grants from Montana’s Office of Public Instruction.
Registration is now open and is $150 through May 14 and will cost $170 after May 14. Participants can also register on site for OPI renewal units or 1-2 college credits for 199 per credit.
