MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Sandra Dal Poggetto, an artist who honors and challenges the Euro-American landscape painting tradition, will be visiting Montana State University Billings this week for a presentation and a public reception.

Sandra Dal Poggetto art

Dal Poggetto’s “Paintings, Works on Paper, and Objects” will be on display starting Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Northcutt Steele Gallery on the MSU Billings four-year campus. She will be participating in an open artist talk in room 205 of the Liberal Arts building from 4-5 p.m. A free public reception will follow from 5-7 p.m. at the gallery area.

Dal Poggetto uses paints, feathers and pelts of animals she hunts in the forests and high plains of the American West for her work. She addresses themes of place, integration and alienation, nature and culture, life and death in her art.

Originally from California, Dal Poggetto received her master’s degree in painting and drawing from San Francisco State University. She has participated in several selected solo exhibits around the country.

After traveling beyond her home, she chose to live and work in the Rocky Mountain West and now makes her home in Helena.

In her artist statement s, she notes “I deepened my understanding of landscape by learning to hunt wild game birds and deer in the forests and high plains. I don’t want to be just a spectator. Rather, I want to engage with my animate surroundings. With rich paints and luxurious feathers and pelts, I hope to both honor and challenge that Euro-American tradition and give form to a fresh, and also ancient, awareness of the natural world. ”

Her art will be on display through mid-December in Northcutt Steele Gallery on the main level of the Liberal Arts Building of MSU Billings. The gallery is open during regular school hours and is free to the public.
