MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — A new online literary quarterly based in Montana with a distinctly international flavor is being edited by two members of the Montana State University Billings faculty.

 

Stone’s Throw Magazine is an online publication designed in Montana with poetry, fiction, nonfiction, art, reviews and interviews from around the world. It is edited by Tami Haaland, MSU Billings associate professor of English and director of the university’s Honor’s Program, and Russell Rowland, an award-winning novelist who teaches part-time at MSU Billings.

 

Stones Throw MagazineAssistance and design expertise is provided by Malia Burgess, an alumnus of MSU Billings.

 

Haaland said she, Rowland and Burgess have been working on the publication for more than a year and wanted to publish quality writing, poetry and art from around the world. They have found wide interest.

 

“There are networks of people who helped get the word out about the magazine,” she said.

 

The word indeed got out. The first issue, for example, included photography from Sharareh Malek Mohammadi, who was born in Germany and raised in Iran. As a Baha'i, she was prohibited from studying in conventional Iranian universities and instead received a B.A. in Linguistics from the Baha'i Institute of Higher Education and a M.A. in English from Pune University in India. She now lives in Tehran and teaches English as a foreign language.

 

The second issue features work from Billings to Brazil, Nigeria and Iran.

 

“I think this project presents fine writing from regional, national, and international writers,” Haaland said.

 

The second issue also features a review of a new Rick Bass memoir by Dr. Bernard Quetchenbach, a writer and assistant professor of English at MSU Billings.
