Fifth annual ‘Stirring the Pot’ event set for March 26

 

MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Gender politics and its role in American and world politics is the focus of the fifth annual “Stirring the Pot” forum by and about women at Montana State University Billings.

 

“Who Runs the World: Gender, Politics and Potential” is the focus of this year’s event, which is scheduled for Thursday, March 26 from 7-9 p.m. in the Lewis and Clark Room of the MSU Billings Student Union Building. The event is free and open to everyone.

 

“Who Runs the World: Gender, Politics and Potential” was inspired by the intense 2008 presidential campaign that involved Republican Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin — who ran as vice presidential candidate with John McCain — and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.  Speakers at the forum will focus on the political gender gap in the United States; global gender parity in politics; women and war in recent American history; Wangari Maathai’s grassroots green movement in Africa; and the life and work of Jeanette Rankin.  “Who Runs the World” will challenge both men and women to rethink how political systems might better serve justice in patriarchal societies.

 

The first hour of this interactive event will be devoted to speakers, who will offer 10-minute presentations.  The second hour is reserved for questions, answers and interaction with the audience. Speakers include: 

  • Dr. D’Ann Campbell, provost and academic vice chancellor at MSU Billings.
  • Dr. Jennifer Duncan, assistant professor of history at MSU Billings.
  • Dr. Joy Honea, assistant professor of sociology at MSU Billings.
  • Jen Gross and Kaye Stein, both MSUB students.

The “Stirring the Pot” forums have been developed to showcase women’s voices.  They are designed to expand understanding of the world we live in and how we live in our world.  The forums are sponsored by the MSU Billings Philosophy Department and the university’s United Campus Ministry.
