Free poetry reading set for Monday in the SUB
MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — A poetry reading and displays on different ways of presenting poetry are among the special presentations for National Poetry Month at Montana State University Billings.
The poetry reading will be held Monday, April 20, from 11:40 a.m to 1:50 p.m. at the Student Union Building on the MSU Billings main campus. The reading is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
In addition, a collaborative project by artists and writers is now up showing that images are not only worth thousands of words, but that words can also evoke a myriad of images.
As part of National Poetry Month, students in Tami Haaland’s poetry class and students in Dennis Kern’s computer graphics class collaborated on a project uniting images and words. Some of those images are hanging near the entryway to the Northcutt Steele Gallery on the first floor of the LA building.
In addition, an animation of a poem is also playing in the gallery, which is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no admission fee for the gallery.
Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is now held every April, when publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools and poets around the country band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. Thousands of businesses and non-profit organizations participate through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops, and other events.
