MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — The life and personal impact of longtime Billings educator Ron Nistler will be honored in golf tournament in August that will help raise funds for local educational programs.

The Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search programs at Montana State University Billings are hosting the Ronald Nistler Educators Memorial Golf Tournament at Eagle Rock Golf Course on Friday, Aug. 8. Check-in begins at 10 a.m. with the shotgun start at noon.

Dr. Dan Benge, the director of Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search at MSU Billings, said the event was put together to remember the positive effect Nistler and other educators have on the community.

“Educators are the life blood of any community,” Benge said. “They are the people who ensure that societies continue to move forward and advance. It is these people who instill the educational foundation for students that provide the opportunity for them to excel in their chosen careers and profession throughout their lives.”

Nistler died in 2003 after a life of service to students and the community in both Billings School District 2 and Billings Central Catholic High School. For the last four years of his life, he was the academic advisor for Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search at MSU Billings.

Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search are two of six federally supported TRiO programs that support and encourage youth from disadvantaged backgrounds pursue educational opportunities. The programs operate year-round at MSU Billings.

Entrance fee for the four-person Ronald Nistler Educators Memorial scramble tournament is $80 per person or $300 per team. Proceeds will be used to assist students interested in taking part in the Upward Bound or Educational Talent Search programs.
