Approved January 2026

Faculty may create and schedule independent study (x92), seminar/workshop (x94), special topics (x91), and other “90s” courses without walking them though the full curricular process.  However, if the course does not already exist in the catalog, faculty must supply the basic requirements of the course, so that the Senate and Registrar Offices may appropriately build the course.  Those include:

  • Credits (either variable range or set at a number)
  • Course description
  • Graded or pass/fail
  • Repeatable for credit each time (if so, how many times)
  • Restrictions, such as majors or departments
  • Learning outcomes

If a similar course already exists, the regular curricular process will be followed.

Capstone/Thesis courses (x99) are excluded from the above procedure and must always go through the curricular process to be created.
