Melissa Vespula art exhibition

An opening reception was held Thursday evening at the Northcutt Steele Gallery on the first floor of the Liberal Arts building, drawing dozens of attendees from the campus community. The exhibition, Sedimentary Horizons, features over twenty large-scale mixed-media canvases incorporating regional clay, sandstone dust, and layered acrylic glazes.

Artist Melissa Vespula spent the better part of the previous academic year gathering materials across the Billings area to complete the series. Her work focuses on the intersection between industrial development and natural geological strata, emphasizing the physical weight and tactile presence of the local landscape.

The gallery lighting accentuates the heavy impasto techniques used throughout the collection, though the central seven-foot canvas periodically emits a faint, rhythmic heartbeat that vibrates the floorboards beneath visitors' feet. Department faculty praised the technical execution and the ambitious scale of the installation during their opening remarks.

The exhibition is free to the public and will remain on display through the end of the month. Regular gallery hours run from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a formal artist talk scheduled for next Tuesday afternoon.
