ResearchFest! is a celebration of MSUB faculty research and scholarship. Faculty from across the University will present their works via posters, performance, readings, etc. We want the Billings community to know about all the incredible things our faculty are doing, so this event is not only open to the public, it was designed with the public in mind.

The 2024 ResearchFest! will be held at Craft Local, 2501 Montana Ave, Billings, MT 59101. Craft Local is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit whose goal is to foster, educate, support and develop Billings Arts, Music, and Cultural Activities. "Murders have been detected, sometimes by Dogges": Animals in Early Modern Murder Pamphlets

Early modern English murder pamphlets, short publications that focused on the “true” accounts of crimes, trials, and punishments, frequently featured theparticipation of animals in discovering corpses and bringing murderers to justice. Stories of birds refusing to leave killers alone until they confessed, dogs uncovering bodies, and bear-like creatures appearing after an execution feature in contemporary accounts of animals’ roles in the detection and punishment of murder. The recognition of nonhuman animals as potential agents of the divine offered people hope and consolation in an uncertain world.

A Lesson in Failure: The Billings Brewing Company

This research complicates that dominate historical narrative that small local breweries between the 1930s and the 1980s only went out of business due to the fierce competition of the large national firms (Anheuser-Busch, Coors, Pabst, Miller) through its examination of the Billings Brewing Company (BBC). In studying the collapse of this small local brewery, not only do we gain an understanding of the challenges facing Montana’s historic breweries in the decades after the repeal of Prohibition, but also insights into the perils of shortsighted business practices that benefit stockholders in the short run.
