“Why do you dress like that if you don’t want people to look at you?” With this painting, I chose to depict the constant contradiction as a physical struggle many women may feel internally trying to live in an ongoing objectification solely for the gratification of others. If she decides to show off, she’s not worthy of respect. However, if she decides to conceal it completely, she’s no fun. Always look presentable, but don’t try so hard. Create life and raise children, but make sure to drop that baby weight and get rid of your stretch marks. Creating this piece was inspired by a combination of watching news reports, hearing stories from my family and friends, and integrating my own personal experiences. It was difficult attempting to captivate the depth of these feelings into one painting, but the process of it coming together piece by piece reminded me of everyone who had experienced many of the same things. “Whose Body?” was a powerful piece to create, and I hope it brings strength to those who are working to reclaim their own bodies.
