Artist Statement
Printmaking can be a very hands-on process. We are always encouraged to wear rubber gloves to keep from staining our hands and transferring the ink to other surfaces. But within minutes of wearing them I usually remove them, preferring the extra precision and sensitivity I get from my bare hands. This can often result in an awkward dance with my hands and the materials; where I must balance the paper or the print matrix in odd ways to avoid marking them with my ink stained fingers. Earlier in the learning process, evidence of my sloppiness was very apparent. But as I have worked more with the medium and the materials, I see less marks and mistakes attributed to my approach. This gives me increased confidence that gloves are merely an extra precaution rather than a necessity.
