Artist Statement

Lady Bird Johnson recorded her White House Diary which spanned over five years and included over 1,700,000 words. Her words present a different interpretation of the Johnson Presidency and offer a direct insight into the world of a woman who quietly wielded transcendent power in the masculine political utopia of the 1960s.

The title is a direct quote from Lady Bird during her last day in office. Reflecting on her five years in D.C, she is filled with optimism and hope for the future as she closes the door on the most chaotic chapter of her life and returns to the quiet solitude of her beloved Texas Hill Country.

During the research process of this work, the artist spent a year working at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park in Johnson City, Texas where she was inspired by the scenic and historic landscape of the Texas Hill Country that Lady Bird called home.
