Artist Statement
As an illustrator, I find adventure and set out on journeys with my characters. I use ink and paper to communicate snippets of stories and moments in time. Oftentimes in illustration the journey of the character and the reader are paramount, but with this work, I was surprised to discover my own opportunity to play, experiment, and participate in a new way. I used large swaths of craft paper as a playground for full body movement, harnessing the flowing nature of my sketchbook on an immense scale. I drew inspiration from the immediacy and spontaneity of Abstract Expressionists to interact with the materiality of the work. I let myself let go and let it be, not controlling the characters or the media too much. This large-scale work allowed me to breathe and make without rules, fear, or frames.
