Artist Reception Follows
Red Star's exhibition is inspired by and investigates representations of Medicine Crow and the 1880 Crow Peace Delegation to D.C. The exhibit consists of reproductions of photographs (taken in D.C. by C. M. Bell) annotated by Red Star with notes on cultural detail in red ink scrawled on the portraits, a photo-based tapestry with digitally-reproduced commercialized images of Medicine Crow, stuffed Softie toys inspired by Medicine Crow’s drawings of circus animals, Crow regalia. Integrated into the exhibition are the artist's selections of Medicine Crow's original drawings, which are held as part of the Barstow Collection in MSUB Library's Special Collections.
The exhibition is accompanied by presentations and conversations with local, regional, and national humanities scholars discussing Native American art, experience, cultural identity, and representation. The series begins on Tuesday, Oct. 18 with a talk by Dr. C. Adrian Heidenreich at 6:30pm in LI148 followed by a reception. The series is supported by Humanities Montana with additional support provided by Northcutt Steele Gallery, MSUB Library, MSUB Foundation, MSUB Department of Art, and MSUB American Indian Outreach.

Wendy Red Star, an enrolled member of the Crow Tribe, earned her MFA in sculpture at UCLA and is an independent artist living in Portland, Oregon. Her work is included in collections and exhibits of the National Museum of the American Indian, the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, and many others. She has managed Chief Plenty Coups State Park in Pryor, MT.
