Burke Jam
FRACTURE
November 13–December 11
Reception & Artist Talk: Thursday, November 13, 5–7 PM
Talk Begins at 6 PM
Burke Jam's exhibition Fracture opens on November 13 and remains on view through December 11.
In 2013-14, Burke Jam spent the year in Iceland researching and producing a new body of artwork that explores listening and sound as alternate means of engaging with, and representing the physical landscape. His exhibition Fracture brings together mixed-media and interactive installations, a series of drawings and photographs, and field-recorded sound works that were inspired by his experience.
Exploring sound as phenomenon and art object, Fracture makes tangible subtle environmental shifts and patterns that might otherwise go unperceived. According to Jam, "our ability to interweave information about perception, perspective and place into clear points of connection, allows us greater understanding of our world and the vital relationship we each have with place, and with each other."
Burke Jam was born and raised in rural Montana. He received his BA in Art and MFA in Sculpture (2013) from the University of Montana. He received a Fulbright Grant in 2013-14 to Iceland where he spent a year of research synthesizing the relationship between physical place, environmental sound and perceptual coherence. Jam is currently an Adjunct Professor of Art at Portland State University and he works as a smokejumper for the US Forest Service in the summer months.
A free catered reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, November 13 beginning at 5pm. Jam will give a gallery talk beginning at 6pm. The reception, talk, and exhibition are all open to the public.
The Northcutt Steele Gallery is located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts Building on the Montana State University Billings campus. The gallery is open Monday – Friday from 8:00am – 4:00 pm, and by appointment.
