MSUB Department of Art¹s 2014 Juried Student Exhibition opens on Thursday, March 27th
with a reception from 5pm-7pm. This year¹s juror, Jane Waggoner Deschner, will announce
cash awards for outstanding achievement at 6pm. The reception is free and open to
the public.
Submissions were received in response to an exhibition call extended to all students
currently enrolled at Montana State University Billings and 34 students were chosen
for inclusion. The 39 artworks selected testify to the rich talents and diverse visions
of MSUB students working across a broad range of media.
Guest Juror Deschner is a former student of MSUB, where she earned a BA in Art. She
earned her MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has been featured on numerous
blogs including: hand/eye, American Craft Magazine¹s Why I Make, House of Mirth, Mr X Stitch, Accidental
Mysteries and Hand Embroidery Network and she has been awarded residencies or fellowships at Ucross Foundation, Clearmont,
WY: The Banff Centre, Banff, Alberta, AC: Santa Fe Art Institute, Sante Fe, NM, Her
work is included in the collections at Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis, MN, Missoula
Art Museum, and University of Montana, among others. Deschner has also served as
a Governor¹s appointee to the Montana Arts Council since May of 2008.
"The exhibition is a great professional development opportunity for our student artists,
offering them experiences with the process of preparing artwork for gallery display
and familiarizing them with the process of a juried exhibitions," according to Gallery
Director Leanne Gilbertson. "We are thrilled to have Jane Waggoner Deschner visit
and to see the exceptional work of our students, including the work of our gallery
assistants who have been involved in all aspects of realizing the exhibition."
The Northcutt Steele Gallery is located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts on
the Montana State University Billings campus. The gallery is open Monday Friday
