MSUB Department of Art’s 2013 Juried Student Exhibition opens on Thursday, April 4 with a catered reception and awards ceremony from 5pm–7pm. Awards will be announced at 6pm. The reception is free and open to all members of the University community and the general public.
MSUB students selected for inclusion in the exhibition are: Emma Berry, Jesse R. Burns, Katie Ericksen, Lillie Grace, Holly Grob, Jesse Harkness, Breanna Jarrett, Amanda Losness, Bonny Beth L. Luhman, Robbie Mann, Joel Miller, Patrick Mueller, Kristin Rude, Maria Selvig, Sydne Sherman, Megan Stahl, Anastasia Swarthout, Ashley Virag, Laura Walker, and Jamie Winter
The 25 artworks selected testify to the rich talents and diverse visions of MSUB students
working across a broad range of media.
This year, the selection of artworks to receive a number of distinguished awards
will be made by the invited guest juror Cathryn Mallory, who will be visiting the
department and viewing the exhibition on April 3 and 4. Hundreds of dollars in awards
in recognition of outstanding achievement will be announced during the opening reception.
Regarding criteria used for selecting artworks for awards, Northcutt Steele Gallery
Director Leanne Gilbertson notes, “They are often based on a combination of factors
including: aesthetic quality related to entries by peers; craftsmanship; integration
of the artwork’s concept with formal choices; and indication of promising potential
for a professional art career.”
Guest juror Cathryn Mallory is currently Professor of Art and Director of the Gallery of Visual Arts at University of Montana where she teaches Professional Practices, BFA Senior Thesis, and 3D Fundamentals courses. Mallory has also served as Curator of Art at Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art in Great Falls and is actively involved with numerous state arts organizations, as well as exhibiting her own work on a national level.
“The exhibition is a great professional development opportunity for our student artists, offering them experiences with the process of preparing artwork for gallery display and familiarizing them with the process of a juried exhibition,” says Gilbertson. “We are thrilled to have Professor Mallory visit to see the exceptional work of our students and to offer them valuable professional advice.” In addition to making the selection of the awards for the exhibition during her time on campus, Mallory will be speaking about her own artwork on Thursday, April 4 at 12:10pm in Room 407 in the College of Education building on the MSUB campus.
