MSUB Department of Art’s Northcutt Steele Gallery features a collaborative series of monoprints by Tina LaMour and O. Gustavo Plascencia in the exhibition, “Dichotomies: Traces and Places,” opening on Thursday, February 28. LaMour, a sculptor and printmaker, and Plascencia, a photographer, have jointly produced a group of richly layered images exploring experiences of identity formation. The collaboration, which began as a series of conversations about each individual artist’s past experiences with family, religion, faith, and social institutions, culminates in artworks that visually explore personal connections and disconnections, continuities and dichotomies, with the other. The overlaps and gaps the two identified while discussing how each used references to cultural memory to reconstruct personal past experiences are represented in delicately printed layers of symbols and visual cues that provocatively suggest similarities and differences, conformity and individuation.

Tina LaMour is currently an Assistant Professor at North Country Community College in Malone, NY.  She received a B.F.A. from SUNY Plattsburgh in Plattsburgh, NY and a M.F.A in sculpture from the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO. Working primarily in sculpture and printmaking LaMour has shown nationally and internationally. O. Gustavo Plascencia was raised in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila and attended the Escuela de Artes Plasticas “Ruben Herrera” in Saltillo, Coahuila Mexico before immigrating to the USA. He received a B.F.A. from the University of Texas at Arlington in Arlington, TX and a M.F.A. at the University of Colorado in Boulder in Photography and Media Arts. Plascencia is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA and has also shown his work nationally and internationally.

An artist talk will be presented on Thursday, March 21 at 4pm in Northcutt Steele Gallery in the Liberal Arts Building on the MSUB campus. A catered artist reception will immediately follow in the 1st floor lobby of the Liberal Arts Building.
