The Pippenger Award was established in 2005, at Montana State University Billings, by Richard and Cheri Cox, their sons Shaun and Scott Cox, and the members of the Cox Family, in honor of Mrs. Cox’s parents. The Walter and Charlotte Pippenger Excellence in Innovation Award offers a $5,000.00 stipend to an individual or group whose efforts, projects, or programs clearly and objectively demonstrate improvement in the undergraduate teaching and learning experience.

Dick and Cheri Cox, their sons Shaun and Scott Cox, who, with their family members, have for many years funded the Cox Fellowship for Junior Faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences at MSU Billings, have established the Walter and Charlotte Pippenger Excellence in Innovation Award to encourage significant innovative and creative improvements in the experiences of undergraduate students at Montana State University Billings.

Overview

An annual award in the amount of $5,000 will be given to acknowledge and reward the faculty or staff member/s who demonstrates the most successful and innovative program or project that significantly enhances undergraduate teaching and student learning at Montana State University Billings. Programs and projects must have been “completed” within the past academic year (2023-2024) to be eligible for consideration.

Purpose

Recognition will be given to an individual or group whose efforts, projects, or programs demonstrate significant improvement in the undergraduate teaching and learning experience. Such improvement(s) may be demonstrated through curricular revisions, retention efforts, student recruitment efforts, community-based learning, demonstration of “best practices” in teaching, civic engagement, technology applications, service learning, cooperative education, outcomes-based assessment, internships, international education experiences, field experiences, diversity education, etc.
