The Academic Support Center will engage and empower individuals to become confident, capable, independent learners while providing academic instruction and support in a safe and encouraging environment. Within this environment, the Writing Center offers free writing consulting services for all stages of the writing process. This can be done through drop-in and appointment-based tutoring, skills-based workshops at both campuses, and teaching with writing consulting services for faculty. 

The Writing Center is committed to ensuring that all MSUB students become empowered writers and achieve their educational objectives through the application of fundamentally sound academic support principles. To ensure a productive and empowering experience using our services, we have set the following expectations:

Plan Ahead

Come see us ahead of your deadline. We offer support across all stages of the writing process, including brainstorming ideas and outlining your essay structure, forming and drafting your writing, incorporating sources and ensuring proper citation format, and tips on revising your work before submitting it.

Know What is Expected of You 

Talk to your instructor or professor for clarification on your assignment prompt. Bring your assignment prompt to the Writing Center.

Be Specific

If possible, bring specific questions to the Writing Center to help your consultant best guide you towards appropriate strategies and resources.

Take Ownership

Do your own work with our support. Your writing consultant is a partner in your learning process. We are here to help you become more empowered in your educational journey.

What We Do Not Offer

We are not an editing service. You cannot expect to drop off your assignment for corrections. We will point out common errors to you and provide you with resources to correct them yourself.

We are not a last-minute fix. You cannot expect to come in during the last hours before your assignment is due and address every issue. We will offer drop-in writing consulting services to anyone at any stage of the writing process, and we will do our best to help you.
