Jackets Give Up Lead, Match in Ninth Straight Loss (Oct. 17, 2003)

SILVER CITY, NM – Attempting to put the brakes to an
eight-match losing skid, the MSU Billings volleyball team let a 2-1 lead
slip away Friday night in a 3-2 loss at Western New Mexico (30-25, 23-30,
25-30, 30-26, 15-9). The Yellowjackets fell to 3-15 overall for the
season and 0-7 in the PacWest. The Mustangs improved to 9-13, 1-6.
The Yellowjackets won their first game since
September 17 when they took Friday’s second game 30-23. That win tied the
match at 1-1 and MSUB followed with a 30-25 win in game three to take a
2-1 lead in the match.
Just one game from winning their first conference
match of the season, the Yellowjackets dropped the next two games
including a 15-9 decision in the fifth game. MSUB had five kills and five
errors for a .000 hitting percentage in the game-five loss.
Jessica Bratton (Fr., Casper, WY) led all players in the match with 16 kills. She had
just seven errors in 40 attempts for a .225 hitting percentage. Olivia Munro (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) and Cortney Metzler (Jr., Roundup, MT) had 15 kills apiece. Metzler had a team-best .364
hitting percentage in 33 attempts and also added six block assists. Sandy Beal (Sr.,
Troy, MT) and Katrina Dahlgren (Sr., Missoula, MT) posted six and five block assists respectively as the Yellowjackets finished the
match with 13.5 total team blocks.
Kari Jones (Jr.,
Hermiston, OR) had her best match of the season with 52 assists and 17
digs. Six different Yellowjackets posted double-digit digs led by Alberta Letoa’s
(Fr., Laie, HI) match-high 24.
The Yellowjackets and Mustangs will square off again
Saturday night in a non-conference match. MSUB will next play at Rocky
Mountain on October 22. The next home match for the Jackets will be a
Halloween PacWest showdown with Chaminade. |
