Last Minute PK Lifts Jackets to Victory (Oct.
25, 2003)
BILLINGS, MT – Thomas Pertuit’s goal on a penalty kick with just 35 seconds
remaining gave the MSU Billings men’s soccer team a 2-1 exhibition
win over Laramie County Community College on Saturday. Pertuit
(Jr., Billings, MT) scored both of the Yellowjackets’ goals.
The teams played to a 0-0 halftime tie with
few offensive opportunities in the first 45 minutes. The
Yellowjackets’ Andres Calabro (Sr., Cipolletti, Argentina) had two shots
inside of ten yards in the first half, but both were stopped by
the Eagles’ keeper, Adam Simonton. MSUB goalkeeper Gordie Vierck (Sr., Pasco, WA) stopped the only shot on goal
he faced in the first half and made four saves in the game.
Pertuit broke the tie early in the second
half when Victor Sargent (Fr., Billings, MT) pushed the ball into the
box and Pertuit emerged from the pack with the ball and the shot.
The Golden Eagles tied the game in the 82nd minute on
an Orlando Naumann goal.
With the game seemingly heading for overtime,
Pertuit broke loose down the left sideline with the ball and beat
his man into the box only to be grabbed by the goalkeeper. With
just 35 ticks left on the clock, Pertuit drilled his penalty kick
into the lower left corner of the goal for the game winner. LCCC
then sent the ball out of bounds on their possession and the
Jackets were able to run out the clock.
MSU Billings finished the season 6-9-1
overall. Head coach Doug
Seigle, after his second season, is 12-20-1.
