MSUB I THINK Youth Programs

All camps take place at MSU Billings University Campus (1500 University Drive) unless otherwise noted.  Camps are listed by date and grade.

 

LEGO Robotics Junior

June 5 - 9 (Mon - Fri); 9 am - 12 pm

Students entering 2-3 grades; Fee: $180

Instructor: Mark Kane, K-12 Educator

 

Description:  Focused on building an interest in science and engineering, this hands-on camp will capture young children's inherent curiosity and direct it toward discovering the possibility of improving the world around them. A real-world challenge will be featured and students will be encouraged to solve it with critical thinking and imagination.  Be sure to bring a water bottle and snack each day to this camp.


 

Coding

June 12-16 (Mon-Fri); 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Students entering 4-8 grades; Fee $175

Instructor: Mark Kane, K-12 Educator

 

Description:  Interested in coding? Join us during this camp, where you'll learn even more! Using the program Scratch, make your favorite characters move, dance, talk, and so much more. What you learn in this camp can be used at home to continue coding, using this free program. Be sure to bring a water bottle and snack each day to this camp.  Want to stay for the afternoon's LEGO Stop Motion camp that begins at 1 pm each day this week?  Be sure to register for both camps and bring a lunch each day.  MSUB staff will ensure your child is escorted to the camp and stay with them until camp begins. 


 

LEGO Stop Motion

June 12-16 (Mon-Fri); 1-4 pm

Students entering 4-8 grades; Fee $175

Description:  Love The LEGO Movie and want to create your own? Then this is the summer camp for you! Using iPads and LEGO pieces and figurines, we'll learn some of the tricks of stop motion animation and create our own movie!  Be sure to bring a water bottle and snack each day to this camp. 


 

Intro to Coding

June 19-21 (Mon - Wed); 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Students entering 2-3 grades; Fee: $135

Description:  This shorter camp is geared toward younger students who are interested in coding.  Using super fun programs, make your favorite characters move, dance, talk, and so much more. What you learn in this camp can be used at home to continue coding, using a free program. Be sure to bring a water bottle and snack each day to this camp.  Want to stay for the afternoon's Intro to LEGO Stop Motion camp that begins at 1 pm Monday through Wednesday?  Be sure to register for both camps and bring a lunch each day.  MSUB staff will ensure your child is escorted to the camp and stay with them until camp begins.

Description:  Experience the fun of working with technology and science through the use of LEGO EV3 robotics! Students will be introduced to LEGO Mindstorms, building and programming. Using their robots, students will complete different challenges. There are two different dates and times for this very popular camp.  Some information and challenges will be different in each of the two LEGO 1 camps offered this summer (LEGO 1, Session 1 is June 19 – 23 and LEGO 1, Session 2 is July 10-14).  Students must bring their lunch, a water bottle, and snacks to this day-long camp.


 

Raspberry Pi Beginning

July 10-12 (Mon-Wed); 9 am - 3:30 pm

Location: City College; Students 6-9 grades; Fee: $230

Instructor: Bruce Brumley, City College Computer Technology Instructor

 

Description:  Do you want to build your own computer and learn to program it? How about storing all sorts of cool things on it like photos from your camera or phone, games, and be able to surf the Internet? During this 3-day camp, students will learn how to build and operate a Raspberry Pi computer; program using SCRATCH, use their computer to create music, code using Python, and perform operating system maintenance from the command line. (Monitor, keyboard, and mouse will be provided for the camp, but campers must purchase their own for use after the camp – the instructor will provide information on low-cost, high quality items to purchase.) Students must bring headphones, their lunch, a water bottle, and snack to this day-long camp.


 

LEGO 1, Session 2

July 10-14 (Mon-Fri); 9 am - 3:30 pm

Students entering 4-8 grades; Fee: $295

Raspberry Pi Intermediate

July 13-14 (Mon-Fri); 9 am - 3:30 pm

Location: City College; Students 6-9 grades; Fee: $165

Instructor: Bruce Brumley, City College Computer Technology Instructor

 

Description:  Taking off from where we left off with the Raspberry Pi (Beginner) Summer Camp, this camp will get into more programming, both traditional and using SCRATCH.  We will also use the Raspberry PI as an external controller with electronic automation.  Students will use the Raspberry Pi to build and control electronic projects and motor controls.  Students must bring their lunch, a water bottle, and snack to this day-long camp.

 

Prerequisite:  Raspberry Pi Beginner Camp in 2016 or 2017 (or similar – contact us for more details)


 

LEGO 2, Intermediate

July 31- August 4 (Mon-Fri); 9 am - 3:30 pm

Students entering 4-8 grades; Fee: $295

Instructor: Darla Williams, K-12 Educator - Extended Studies

 

Description:  We know you know a lot about LEGO Robotics – how to program and perform complex competitions.  Now, learn even more!  Join us for this unique LEGO Robotics camp using EV3 robots and the program Mindstorms.  Students must bring their lunch, a water bottle, and snacks to this day-long camp.
