M 130 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I

Course Description

3 credits
Prerequisite: M 088 or equivalent
Stresses topics in counting and cardinality, operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry as defined by the Common Core State Standards for mathematics.  Restricted to majors in elementary education and special education.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand problems involving whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, percent, 2-dimensional geometry, and proportional reasoning,
  • Employ multiple strategies to solve problems involving whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, percent, 2-dimensional geometry, and proportional reasoning,
  • Understand the importance of building conceptual foundations and non-algorithmic thinking for these topics before introducing algorithms to young children,
  • Recognize that there are multiple ways in which these topics can be conceptualized and taught, and
  • Anticipate points of potential confusion for young learners
