Week in Review

The Lady Yellowjackets dropped both ends of a two-game road trip to Seattle Pacific University and Northwest Nazarene University over the weekend to sit at 7-9 overall and 4-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The Yellowjackets fell 78-74 against No. 3-ranked Seattle Pacific Thursday night in Seattle.  The Falcons remain unbeaten improving to 16-0 overall and 7-0 in the league.

After the Falcons pulled out to a seven-point lead over the visiting Lady Jackets, Alira Carpenter (Lewistown) unleashed eight points in a four-minute span to push MSUB into the lead by one.  The lead was short-lived as the Falcons Maddie Maloney and Jackie Hollands hit back-to-back three-pointers to bring the Jackets back in check.  SPU built their lead back to nine with 6:08 to play in the half, but a collective Yellowjacket effort capped off by a Kayla McPherson (Glendive) three at the end of the half saw MSUB head to the locker room trailing by four.

“We struggled on the boards but felt fortunate to be down by four at the half against such a strong team,” said head coach Kevin Woodin.  “We didn’t panic in the second half and defended them very well.  We took the lead on a couple of occasion, but the game came down to the final two minutes where the Falcons executed better than we did.”

Dani Henderson (Reed Point) scored six of her 11 second half points right out of the gate drilling two 3-pointers.  Shantell Marquis (Cascade) followed with a layup to tie the game at 44 apiece.  The Lady Jackets continued to push the nationally-ranked Falcons as the two teams faced six ties in the second half.  SPU was able to clinch the conference win dropping in four free throws down the line as time expired.

“Hopefully the next time we are in this situation we will come out on top,” added Woodin.  “It was a great game and we look forward to the challenge of playing against a very good NNU team on Saturday.”

Three Yellowjackets scored in double figures and were led by Carpenter’s 20 points.  Carpenter was 8-of-15 from the field and connected on 4-of-6 from long range.  Marquis added 18 points shooting 8-of-13 from the field.  Henderson came up big for the Jackets scoring 15 points.  The sophomore posted a career-high three 3-pointers and seven assists, while matching her career-best with four steals.  Jen Smith (Belgrade) led MSUB in rebounding pulling down seven boards.

Draining 9-of-17 buckets from behind the arc, the Jackets shot a blistering 53 percent from the perimeter.  The team was 31-of-64 from the field and made a season-high 15 steals.  The Jackets were outrebounded 40-26.

The Lady Jackets fell 90-71 against the Crusaders in Nampa, Idaho on Saturday.  Four players from Northwest Nazarene scored in double figures with the win pushing NNU to 13-4 and 6-2 in the league.

Northwest Nazarene broke open a double-digit lead at the 14-minute mark and used a 17-2 scoring run in a span of 5:13 to lead by 28 with eight minutes to play in the opening half.  The Lady Jackets responded going on a 18-9 run of their own to close out the half to trail by 17 heading into the locker room.

Continuing their run into the second half, the Lady Jackets outscored the Crusaders 30-12 to whittle NNU’s lead to 10 at the 15:11 mark.  Kicking it into high gear, Northwest Nazarene’s Janee Olds used 12 second-half points to lead her team to the 19-point conference win.

Alira Carpenter (Lewistown) led all scorers with 19 points.  The junior guard was 7-of-16 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line.  Dani Henderson (Reed Point) netted 17 points off 7-of-11 shooting from the floor.  Henderson was 3-of-3 from the line and pulled down a team-high four rebounds.  Contributing 14 points was Kayla McPherson (Glendive).  McPherson was 5-of-10 from the field and 2-of-7 from long range.  The big story in the game was Shantell Marquis (Cascade).  Marquis nabbed a career-high 10 steals in setting both the Yellowjacket record and GNAC record for most steals in a single game.

The Lady Jackets had a rough go of it from the perimeter connecting on just 3-of-20 attempts for 15 percent.  The team shot 44 percent from the floor and were outrebounded 44-18.

The Coaches

Kevin Woodin Kevin Woodin, Head Coach
Kevin Woodin enters his fourth season as the head women's basketball coach at MSU Billings in 2007-2008.  He has posted a 61-26 overall record in his first three seasons, capturing two Heartland Conference regular season titles and once conference tournament championship.  Two of Woodin's three teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.  His first win of the 2007-2008 season will move him to No. 3 in school history for career wins.

Woodin became the Lady Yellowjackets' eleventh head women's basketball coach when he took over on July 23, 2004.  He had been the head girl’s basketball coach at Billings West High School for the past ten seasons.  In that time, he led the Lady Bears to a 138-81 record (.630), including back-to-back Class AA state titles in 2003 and 2004.  Woodin’s Bears were a perfect 23-0 in 2004's title run and won the final 36 games Woodin coached at the school.  He earned Montana AA Coach of the Year honors in 2003 and 2004, and was a finalist for the award in 1999 and 2002.

A native of Libby, Mont., Woodin graduated with a degree in mathematics from Carroll College in 1987.  While teaching and coaching at O’Dea High School in Seattle, he earned his masters degree in Athletic Administration from Seattle Pacific University in 1992.  Woodin taught mathematics at O’Dea High School from 1987 to 1994 while also coaching boy’s basketball, golf and tennis.  He was named O’Dea’s Outstanding Teacher of the year in 1990-1991 and the Metro League Golf Coach of the Year three times.

Woodin moved to Billings in 1994 to take over the girl’s program at West High School where he has also taught mathematics.   Along with leading the Lady Bears to State AA tournament hardware in four of his last six seasons, Woodin was also an assistant coach on the Montana All-Star Team and an Executive Committee member and coach for the Treasure State Classic.  At West High, Woodin coached 19 players who went on to play collegiate basketball.

Before the Montana High School Association moved the girl’s basketball season to the winter, Woodin was a part time assistant coach at MSU Billings from 2000-2003.  Responsible for practice and game planning, recruiting, scouting, individual skill development, travel and coordinating the Billings Bees camps, Woodin helped the Lady Yellowjackets to two NCAA Tournament appearances in three seasons.

Woodin has been married to his wife Paula for 20 years, and they have three children (Kayleen, 14; Toria, 11; Garrett, 9).  His parents, Pete and Loretta Erickson, formerly of Roundup, Montana, reside in Sierra Vista, Arizona.

Natalie Visger Natalie Visger, Assistant Coach
The 2007-2008 season will be Visger's second as a full-time assistant for the Lady Jacket basketball team.  She is a 2003 graduate of Montana State University-Billings.  She earned a bachelor of science degree in biology with a minor in chemistry, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a 3.91 GPA.  As a senior in 2003 Visger was named the Outstanding Biology Senior.

“I am very excited to have Natalie join our staff at MSUB,” said Woodin.  “She brings a tremendous amount of experience to the program, both as a player and as a coach.  We are very fortunate to have her, and I am confident she will have a positive impact upon our program.  Natalie’s duties will include directing and assisting with the pre- and postseason weight training and conditioning program, game and practice preparation, recruiting, film exchange, scouting, academic monitoring, travel arrangements, basketball camps and tournaments, and individual skill development.”

Visger was a four-year standout on the basketball court for the Lady Yellowjackets.  As a two-time team captain she helped the Yellowjackets reach three NCAA Tournaments in four years.  As a freshman and sophomore Visger was an All-Pacific West Conference selection.  As a senior she was named the Montana State University-Billings Outstanding Female Student-Athlete.

Known as a tenacious competitor, Visger made several impressions in the Yellowjacket record books.  She still ranks twelfth in school history for scoring with 1,219 career points.  She is also in the career top 10 for free throws made, free throw percentage, rebounds, and rebounding average.

After graduating in 2003, Visger played professionally in Europe for three seasons.  In 2003-2004 she played for TV-Langen in Langen, Germany.  She finished the season ranked second in the league for scoring average at 20.7 ppg.

In 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 Visger played for ASG Theresianum Mainz in Mainz, Germany.  In the ‘04-‘05 season she was again second in the league for scoring at 18.5 ppg and led her team to a second place finish in the league.  Last year along with playing for the Women's first team, which again finished second in the league, she was the head coach for the Women's third team.  In addition to playing professional basketball, Visger, who speaks fluent German, worked as a document translator for STI Security Training International GmbH in Wiesbaden, Germany.
