Week in Review
The Yellowjackets had a split week picking up
their first GNAC road win of the season against Saint Martin's
University on Thursday before falling to NAIA powerhouse Simon
Fraser University in British Columbia on Saturday.

The Montana State Billings men’s soccer team
dominated Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponent Saint
Martin’s, shutting out the Saints 6-0, to stay atop the league
standings.
The Yellowjackets cruised through 90 minutes of
play using a hat-trick from
Sam
Charles (Weymouth, England), two goals from
Jarred
Weisen (Great Falls), and one from
Jurell Linford (Missoula) to ice the win.
The Yellowjackets’ Charles scored the eventual
game-winning goal and only goal of the first half at the 23:06
mark off a penalty kick. The Jackets hit their stride in the
second half scoring five goals. Weisen scored in the 53rd and
60th minutes with a second penalty kick goal by Charles
sandwiched in between. Charles took a corner from
Chris
Cornish (Surrey, England) to head the ball into the net at
67:46 in completing the hat-trick. Linford scored his first
goal of the season in the 82nd minute that was assisted by
senior
Matt D’Hont (Rapid City, S.D.).
MSUB outshot Saint Martin’s 24-7 with a 13-1
shots on goal advantage. Peppering the Saints’ keeper Zac Lubin
throughout the game, Lubin tackled six saves in the effort.
Sander Tollefson (Missoula) made one save in the game before
giving way to
Matthew
Mitchell (Thornton, CO) for the final 10:45 of the contest.

On Saturday, Simon Fraser’s Justin Carvery used
a pair of goals to lift the Clan to a 2-0 shutout win over the
Montana State University Billings men’s soccer team in Burnaby,
British Columbia.
The Clan jumped out to the quick 1-0 lead after
a penalty kick goal scored at the 17:44 mark of the first half.
The goal, Carvery’s third of the season, turned out to be the
eventual game-winner. The Clan struck again at the midpoint of
the second half as Carvery scored an unassisted goal in the 65th
minute.
The Yellowjackets were outshot 12-2 in the game
with the Clan holding a 4-0 shots on goal advantage.
Sander Tollefson (Missoula) made two saves in goal while his
teammate, and GNAC leading-scorer,
Sam
Charles (Weymouth, England) made both of the Jackets’ shots
in the game.
The hat trick against Saint Martin's was
Charles’s second of the season. The three goals move him
to 17 total goals on the season, and move him into first in
school history for goals scored in a single season. He
surpassed Dave Austin’s record of 15 goals scored during the
1998 season.
As a team, the Yellowjackets have scored 30
goals to lead the conference in offense. MSUB is also just nine
goals shy of tying the school record for total goals scored in a
single season at 39. At the Jackets’ current feverish pace, the
team has a good chance of setting the record late in the season.
Record Watch/Notables: The Yellowjackets
have had a record-breaking season in every sense of the word
already, but still have some attainable milestones and notable
statistics...the Jackets are just nine goals shy of tying the
school record of 39 goals scored in a single season....averaging
2.30 goals per game through the first 13 games of the season, the Yellowjackets will need to score 1.8
goals per game to tie the record set back in 2001...with five
games remaining in the season, Sam Charles has the opportunity
to add to his own record of 17 goals scored in a single
season...Charles broke the 1998 record in the team's 6-0 win
over Saint Martin's last week...although Scott Dixon has been
sidelined for six games due to illness, he still moved into
first in school history for total assists in a single season
with five...Sander Tollefson, with assistance from his back line,
has a 0.76 goals against average....his own record, set last
season, of 1.43 may fall if the team continues at this
pace...the least amount of goals ever allowed by a Yellowjacket
squad is 25...that record was set during the 2006 season...the
team the Yellowjackets are fielding in 2007 have allowed just
nine goals total and will likely rank first in school history
once the dust has settled...Greg McKeever is on track to play in
and start all 72 games of his collegiate career with Josh
Hernandez reaching 71...the previous record was set by former
teammate Jesse Span who played in 69 games in his four years.
AROUND THE
GNAC:
Oliver Wellman had two goals and two assists as Western
Washington won three games to extend its win streak to six, its
longest since winning seven in a row in 2004. Keith Ferris also
had two goals. . .Sam Charles recorded his second hat trick and
his fifth multi-goal game in a 6-0 win at Saint Martin’s.
Charles has a school-record 17 goals this season, five short of
the GNAC single-season record. Jarred Weisen added two goals in
the win. . .SPU’s James Coggan had a goal and four assists,
including three in the first half against Colorado - Colorado
Springs to tie a school record. . .Cameron Mertens had three
goals and Hodges, Dustin Allbery and Jake Ellig each had two as
Seattle outscored its three opponents 13-2 and outshot them
80-15. The Redhawks tied a GNAC record unleashing 39 shots in a
6-1 win over Mary, N.D.
GNAC PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK:
Jeff Hallenbeck, Seattle
Pacific (M-F, 5-8, Sr., Redmond, WA - Inglemoor) and Michael
Lockwood, Western Washington (GK, 6-2, Sr., Canby, OR – Skagit
Valley). . .Hallenbeck scored four goals, including a hat trick
against Colorado – Colorado Springs, and also had two assists in
a pair of wins. Among his goals against UCCS was an 18-yard
free kick into the upper left corner, which would have beaten
any defense. He also tormented the Mary and UCCS defenses with
his tight control and passing in tight situations in a pair of
victories. . .Lockwood posted three shutouts, making 11 saves,
including eight in a 1-0 road win at Cal State Stanislaus, as he
extended his scoreless streak to 294:56. “He was phenomenal
(against CSU Stanislaus) with eight saves, two from point-blank
range right at the end to preserve the win and the shutout,” WWU
coach Travis Connell said.
HONORABLE
MENTION: Chris Hodges,
Seattle University (D, 5-10, Jr., Redmond, WA – Interlake)
scored two goals and also led a Redhawk defense that allowed
only two goals as SU ran its win streak to six games with a trio
of victories.

University of Mary (webpage) -
The University of Mary has struggled this season, dropping their
last three games for a 3-8-1 overall record. The

Dan McNally, Head Coach
The 2007 season will be Dan McNally's third as the head men's soccer coach at MSU Billings. His teams are 10-24-2 overall in two seasons. In 2005-2006 the Yellowjackets had their best success in the classroom with the men's soccer program leading the Heartland Conference with a 3.32 grade point average.
McNally came to MSU Billings from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he was the top assistant coach for four years.
McNally began his playing career at Bury FC (English 2nd Division), where he was an Apprentice until 1996. In the summer of 1996 McNally moved to the United States to attend Embry-Riddle University where he played soccer.
During his time at Embry-Riddle, he led the Eagles to the 1998 FSC Tournament Championship and the 1999 FSC Regular Season Championship. At Embry-Riddle, McNally was named All-Conference, All-Region and Honorable Mention All-America. He was selected as team MVP his freshman and sophomore years and was a team captain as a senior.
McNally holds NSCAA National and Advanced National coaching licenses, passing both courses with distinction.
McNally graduated in 2000 from Embry-Riddle University with a BS in Communications.
Assistant Coach Adam Spinelli
2007-2008 will be Spinelli's second year as the Yellowjackets' men's soccer assistant. He graduated from Nova Southeastern University with degrees in Business Administration and Sports and Recreation Management. He was a three-year college starter, playing two seasons at Southern New Hampshire University and one at Nova Southeastern.
