Week in Review
The Yellowjackets hit the road last week for a
three-game conference stint in Washington State against No. 4
Seattle Pacific, Western Washington, and No. 15 Seattle
University. While going 0-2-1 on the road against
extremely tough opponents, the Jackets held onto their first
place standing in the Great Northewest Athletic Conference.
MSUB has three conference wins while Seattle Pacific, Western
Washington, and Seattle University each have one.
|
Sam Charles |
On Thursday the Jackets opened the trip against
Seattle Pacific battling to the 1-1 tie. It was the first
meeting of the two teams this season.
The Jackets’ Sam Charles
(Weymouth, England) continued to shine offensively scoring
MSUB’s lone goal of the game in the 78th minute. Charles,
who already holds the GNAC record for consecutive games with at
least one goal scored, added to his record, making it the eighth
game in which the sophomore forward has scored.
In a last
ditch effort, Seattle Pacific scored the equalizer with just
1:07 left in regulation. Matt Kemper scored off his teammates
free kick to send the game into overtime. Playing extra minutes
has become a regularity for the Falcons as the game marked
Seattle Pacific’s fifth overtime game and the fourth resulting
in a tie.
The Jackets traveled to Bellingham for a
rematch against Western Washington on Saturday. The
Jackets defeated the Vikings 2-1 earlier in the season.
Western Washington evened the score overtaking the Jackets 3-0 in
the game.
After conceding just two goals through
eight games, the Yellowjackets had a rough go in the second half
of play allowing Western Washington to score three goals in a
span of 10 minutes. The Vikings outshot the Jackets 20-8
with an 8-2 shots on goal advantage in the game.
|
Sander Tollefson |
In Monday's game against No. 15
nationally-ranked Seattle University, the Redhawks and Jackets
played a defensive battle through 90 minutes of regulation
before Seattle University’s Jason Cascio finally broke through
the Jackets’ back line in the second overtime to score at
104:08, giving the Redhawks the 1-0 decision. Sander
Tollefson (Missoula) had a good day in goal for the Jackets
making a season-high five saves in the game.

The Coaches
Dan McNally, Head Coach
The 2007 season will be Dan McNally's third as the head men's soccer coach at MSU Billings. His teams are 10-24-2 overall in two seasons. In 2005-2006 the Yellowjackets had their best success in the classroom with the men's soccer program leading the Heartland Conference with a 3.32 grade point average.
McNally came to MSU Billings from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he was the top assistant coach for four years.
McNally began his playing career at Bury FC (English 2nd Division), where he was an Apprentice until 1996. In the summer of 1996 McNally moved to the United States to attend Embry-Riddle University where he played soccer.
During his time at Embry-Riddle, he led the Eagles to the 1998 FSC Tournament Championship and the 1999 FSC Regular Season Championship. At Embry-Riddle, McNally was named All-Conference, All-Region and Honorable Mention All-America. He was selected as team MVP his freshman and sophomore years and was a team captain as a senior.
McNally holds NSCAA National and Advanced National coaching licenses, passing both courses with distinction.
McNally graduated in 2000 from Embry-Riddle University with a BS in Communications.
Assistant Coach Adam Spinelli
2007-2008 will be Spinelli's second year as the Yellowjackets' men's soccer assistant. He graduated from Nova Southeastern University with degrees in Business Administration and Sports and Recreation Management. He was a three-year college starter, playing two seasons at Southern New Hampshire University and one at Nova Southeastern.
In 2002 at Southern New Hampshire, Spinelli was named the Northeast-10 Freshman of the Year. He earned third team all-conference honors and was a starter for the Penmen in the NCAA Division II National Championship Game. At Nova Southeastern Spinelli was named to the All-South Region Academic Team and was an Academic All-America Nominee.
Spinelli currently holds a USSF National “C” license and a NSCAA National Goalkeeping license.
