BILLINGS, Mont. – Both the Montana State Billings’ men’s and women’s soccer teams got the spring season off on the right foot as the teams went a combined 3-0 in exhibition play Sunday at the College of Technology Field. The men’s team defeated the University of Great Falls, while the women blanked Rocky Mountain College, 3-0 and defeated the Magic City U-18 club team, 4-1.
The MSUB men’s team and Great Falls played to a 0-0 first half. Jarred Weisen had an opportunity for a first half lead as his ball hit the cross bar as time was winding down. Garrion Hollian broke through in the second half as he took a beautiful through ball from Chris Andre for the score. Later, Weisen redeemed himself as he took a through ball from Tyler Moriarty for the score and a 2-0 lead.
UGF’s Chris Worthen scored in the box off a couple of rebounds late in the game for a 2-1 score.
“We played very well today and we deserved to win,” head men’s coach Dan McNally said. “There were some great individual performances, but I was really impressed with how we played as a team. This is a really strong returning group of players for 2009 and I can’t wait for the season to begin.”
The women’s team jumped on Rocky early with a goal from Kari Foreman off a nice pass from Kelly Ross who was streaking down the left side and centered for the score. The game was 1-0 at halftime, but MSUB was in control of the contest for much of the half and held a 5-1 lead in shots on goal.
In the second half, Kristin Drobny took a pass from Samantha Sandau outside the 18 and put it in the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. Later, Caitlin Differding scored on a cross pass from Chelsea Libby and Ross for a 3-0 score. MSUB held an 11-2 lead in shots on goal for the game.
Just as in the Rocky game, the Yellowjackets wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Sandau took a cross pass from Libby for a 1-0 lead just four minutes in. Later in the first half, Sandau scored her second goal of the game as she scored on a cross from Drobny for a 2-0 lead.
Foreman added two more goals for three for the day in the second half as she gave MSUB a 4-0 lead. Magic City’s, Claire Kornegay scored the lone goal late in the game, for a 4-1 score.
The Yellowjacket women are scheduled to host a six-team tournament, Sat., Apr. 18, at the College of Technology Field as the University of Mary, Great Falls, Rocky, Carroll College and the University of Montana all will play beginning at 9 a.m., with each team playing two games. MSUB then will face Montana, Sun., Apr. 19, at 11 a.m.
