Men’s Golf Ties for First, Women Third at Rocky Mountain Invitational
BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State Billings men’s golf team tied for first at the Rocky Mountain College Invitational Monday afternoon at the par 71, Peter Yegen Golf Club. The Yellowjackets scored a 54-hole team score of 834 as did Lewis Clark State to take top honors. It was the first win of the year for the Yellowjackets after placing fourth at the Carroll College tournament last week.
Montana Tech finished third with a team score of 842, followed by host Rocky Mountain (844) and Westminster rounded out the top five with a score of 869.
Medalist honors went to Montana Tech’s Byron Olson who carded an 11-under 202 for the tournament and a 4-under 67 on Monday. MSUB’s Jake Harr finished second with a 206 and 7-under for the tournament. Jeff Allen finished tied for fourth with a 209 and Matt Stansberg was 10th with a 211 to lead the Yellowjackets.
MSUB’s Travis Gates carded a 212 and Michael Konrad had a 218 to round out the team. Individually, Mike Watson carded a 215, followed by Chris Reichter (217) and Cody Salib with a 228.
On the women’s side, the Jackets finished third with a team score of 952 behind Rocky Mountain (913) and Lewis Clark State (927). The 952 was an improvement of 91 shots in this tournament from a year ago for the Jackets. Medalist honors went to Jen Orchard of Rocky Mountain with a 224 and Madeline Jarrett of Lewis Clark State. Carroll College finished fourth followed by Montana Tech to round out the top five.
“Overall this was a great meet for us,” women’s head coach Kevin Woodin said. “I am really proud of our young team as four out of our five players had personal bests this weekend. I am very pleased with the improvement of this team and we are looking forward to the final few tournaments this fall.”
MSUB’s Kalli Stanhope finished tied for third with a 227 score along with Brooke Stewart of Rocky Mountain. Amy Nordeen finished tied for eighth to lead the Yellowjackets (232).
Along with Stanhope and Nordeen, the Yellowjackets continued to set school records. Their round three team score of 312 broke the school record of 317 set yesterday in the second round. In addition, Lindsay Erickson carded a 244, followed by Libby Rutz with a 249 and Erin Heaney with a 272. Individually, Breanna Magness carded a 276, while Courtney LaDue fired a 54-hole score of 289.
