NAMPA, Idaho – The Montana State Billings
men’s and women’s cross country teams wrapped up their season at
the NCAA Division II West Regional Championships hosted by
Northwest Nazarene University, Saturday, in Nampa.
The women’s 6k race was contested at Eagle
Island State Park. Seattle Pacific ran away with the team title
with an average time of 20:52. Cal State Los Angeles took
second place on the podium with a team average time of 21:07;
just ahead of Chico State who turned in an average time of
21:11.

The Lady Jackets, coming off a win at last
weekend’s Yellowjacket Invite, finished the race 16th overall in
the 23-team field. The Jackets averaged a time of 22:59 as a
team.
Seattle Pacific won first and second places
in the individual race. The Falcons were led by Jessica
Pixler’s 6k time of 19:53. Pixler’s teammate Jane Larson was
second with a time of 20:26. Third place belonged to Chico
State’s Sarah Montez who turned in a time of 20:27, just one
second behind Larson.
The youth movement of three Lady Jacket
freshmen led the way for MSUB. Dianna
Stanley (Miles City) paced the squad finishing 43rd in the
race with a time of 22:21. Mykel Ler (Sidney) was 66th with a 22:49 and Katie
Thiel (Powell, Wyo.) was 72nd with a 22:55.
"The top four Lady Jacket finishers ran the
fastest 6k times in school history," said Yellowjacket head
coach Dave Coppock. "Both our men and women ran extremely
well. The West Region is so competitive, I am very happy
with the way we performed. The women averaged 22:59 as a
team, and anytime you can turn in times like that, it's
impressive."

The men’s 10k was won by an independent
runner from St. Martin’s University. John Riak took top honors
turning in a time of 30:32. Central Washington’s Sam Scotchmer
was second with a 30:35 and Tim Tollefson finished third for
Chico State with a 30:40. The top seven finishers in the race
represented seven different schools. The Yellowjackets Ryan
Ceynar, a freshman from Glendive, was the Jackets’ top
finisher placing 81st with a time of 33:44. Veteran racer, Jarred
Rensvold (Wolf Point), placed 93rd turning in a time of
34:14.
Chico State won the men’s team competition,
their sixth straight, with an average time of 30:57. Western
Washington was second with a 31:34 average narrowly winning out
over third place UC San Diego who ran an average time of 31:59.
The Yellowjacket men were 17th with a average time of 37:19 in
the 19-team field.
