Five MSUB Runners Earn Academic Honor

BILLINGS, Mont. – Five members of the Montana State University Billings cross country teams were named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference cross country all-academic team on Thursday.  The academic teams featured 76 total student-athletes, 24 men and 52 women.

Jarred Rensvold was the only Yellowjacket men’s runner on the academic team.  The Wolf Point, Mont., native has a 3.96 cumulative grade point average in biology.  No other Yellowjackets were eligible to be considered for the team because they are in their first year at MSUB.

The Lady Yellowjackets, usually among the top 10 in the nation for team GPA every year, placed four student-athletes on the team.  Freshmen are not eligible, and six of the Jackets’ 11 runners in 2007 were freshmen.  Making the women’s GNAC academic team were Kym Island, Colleen Dalimata, Cierra Dornfeld, and Erin Gannon.  Island has a 3.86 GPA in human services, Dalimata has a 3.81 GPA in business finance, Dornfeld has a 3.61 GPA in art education, and Gannon has a 3.51 GPA in elementary education.

Heading up the women's academic squad were Heather McIntyre of Alaska Anchorage, Kirsten Clarke of Central Washington, Ashley Puga of Northwest Nazarene and Krinda Carlson of Saint Martin’s, all with perfect 4.00 GPAs.   Among the men, the top academic all-star was Vahur Teppan of Alaska Fairbanks, who also has a perfect 4.00 GPA.

Eight of the athletes – Kaley Strachan of Alaska Anchorage; Krynn Finstad of Alaska Fairbanks; Kevin Lambert of Northwest Nazarene; Kaleigh Bishop of Saint Martin’s; Megan Wrightman, Kaitlin Rohde and Karin Rohde, all of Seattle Pacific, and Keith Lemay of Western Washington,   were also honored for the third time.   Twenty other athletes were repeat selections.

To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.
