MSUB Cruises in GNAC Soccer Opener

BILLINGS, Mont. – A pair
of first half goals sparked the Montana State Billings
women’s soccer team to a 3-0 conference win against Western
Oregon on Thursday. The game was the Yellowjackets’
first-ever Great Northwest Athletic Conference game.
The Yellowjackets improved
to 4-2-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in the conference. Western
Oregon fell to 0-4-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the GNAC. MSU
Billings is currently ranked 10th in the Far West Region by
the NSCAA.
Mandy Ploskonka (Federal Way, Wash.) scored her second
goal of the season just 5:45 into the contest to give the
Yellowjackets the only goal they would need. She scored off
a corner kick from Brittney Sandau (Billings).
MSUB tacked on an
insurance goal 10 minutes before halftime when Sandau beat
the defense for her fourth goal of the year. Amy
Stephens (Colorado Springs) added the final goal in the
70th minute with her second goal of the season. Danielle Ritter (Great Falls) and Jelisa
Guy (Kalispell) assisted.
The Yellowjackets outshot
the Wolves 23-3, including 9-1 shots on goal. Freshman
Samantha Sandau (Billings) fired seven shots and had three
stopped by WOU keeper Ally Meyer. Meyer had six saves on
the day. Brittany Knudtzon (Kent, Wash.) earned the win in goal
for MSUB with one second half save.
The Yellowjackets host
Saint Martin’s (1-4-0, 0-0-0) on Sunday at the MSUB College
of Technology. The game kicks off at 11 a.m. and is part of
Futbol Frenzy. The Yellowjacket men’s team takes on Saint
Martin’s at 1:30. MSUB students can get a free BBQ lunch
between 11:00 and 2:00. The general public can buy the
lunch for $7.50. |
