Lady Jackets Fall at Saint Martin’s,

LACEY, Wash. – A win for the Montana State
Billings women’s basketball team was not in the cards Thursday
night as the Lady Jackets stumbled against the Saints 73-45 in
Great Northwest Athletic Conference action. The loss drops the
Jackets to 9-15 overall and 6-9 in league play, while Saint
Martin’s University, currently ranked eighth in the West Region,
improve to 16-8, and 9-6.
The Saints built a 15-point lead by the
halfway mark of the contest and kicked into cruise control for
the final 20 minutes as SMU led the contest wire-to-wire.
Freshman Kayla
Ryan (Big Timber) carried the Lady Jackets recording a
double-double of 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Ryan
was 5-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-7 from the free throw line. Shantell Marquis (Cascade) was the only other Yellowjacket
to average double figures, posting 10 points. Alira
Carpenter (Lewistown) who has averaged 20.3 points per game
this season was held to just eight points.
The Yellowjackets were a cold 30 percent
from the field and connected on just 3-of-23 from long range for
13 percent. Struggling at the free throw line, the usual
hot-shooting Jackets were 10-of-16 for 63 percent. The Lady
Jackets outrebounded the Saints 44-40 but committed 23 turnovers
to the Saints’ eight.
Four Saints scored in double figures and
were led by Sade Smith’s 14 points and nine boards. Smith
snatched a game-high five steals. Jamey Gelhar netted 12 points
with teammates Michelle Short and Roni Jo Mielke chipping in 10
points apiece.
Saint Martin’s shot 39 percent from the
field and 42 percent from the perimeter draining 8-of-19
attempts. The Saints’ bench combined for 23 points with the
team grabbing 19 steals.
The Lady Yellowjackets wrap up their final
road trip of the season with a contest against Western Oregon
University on Saturday, March 1 in Monmouth, Ore. Tip off is
scheduled for 5 p.m., PST. MSUB closes out their season at home
March 6 and 8. |
